Hey there folks. I'm 26 and needing to go back to college for an education degree. I am married with 2 kids, 10 months and 2 years. Neither my husband nor I have college educations so we're both entry level workers with no specialty (we've both worked in food all of our lives). We currently live in Mesquite, the best of both worlds. We have the miserable heat of Las Vegas with the retirement community small town feel of Reno Which is a better city for families? Being entry-level workers, Reno is more inviting financially but the work in Vegas seems easier to come by? Which neighborhoods should I be looking at as far as safety? My kids are still young so schools aren't much of an issue, but safe childcare definitely is. Anyone have any suggestions?

I lived in Vegas for five years, I now reside back in Minden where I'm from. Family wise northern nevada is more inviting the schools suck now in nevada but we have allot of great charter schools here. South Reno would be the best, nice neighborhoods, quiet and they have some awesome views of Mount Rose and we are close to Lake Tahoe so summer time is very enjoyable if your in to the outdoors.
Dont raise your kids in Vegas, from my experience vegas is very very transient, its hot hot hot I remember my first summer living in vegas, it was horrible!!!!

Unless one likes the heat (that would be me, and the very reason I moved to the desert!).

OP, take a look at the various threads on the Las Vegas forum. There have been a few lately that directly relate to school rankings. The entire state is an armpit for education, but there are a few glimmers of light in the darkness.

We have some nice neighborhoods here in Henderson, with the highest ranked schools. There are a bajillion kids in my neighborhood, so not everyone with kids is avoiding the LV Valley (although I really wish they would keep the kids out of casinos, and off the strip and Fremont).

I can't compare southern NV and northern NV, as I have only lived in southern. But our area in Green Valley (a neighborhood in Henderson) is just a regular suburban neighborhood with families and kids galore.

Las Vegas area has a problem with naturally occurring asbestos. Just Google: Asbestos Southern NV. Also channel 8 recently had a five day report where George Knapp revealed the truth that is being suppressed regarding strange cancers even in teenagers. Not good for kids here! Also, I was a substitute teacher in Las Vegas.. Terrible!

Henderson is just as bad in my experience as far as the school system. The asbestos is everywhere in the area. The scientists doing the research received a cease and desist order to stop their research. I am trying to pack up and get out of this area.

Well, I live in Green Valley, Henderson, Nv. It has some good schools. Don't go to Vegas, too much crime and very few good schools. Of course you know about the heat! There are a lot of young families here. Henderson is in the top five ranked for the most parks per sq. Miles in the country, an award its won the past 10 years! There are numerous sports and activities for families. And they are on-going throughout the year and affordable. $25/50 for a season of baseball, football, basketball, swimming, starting at age 5. Toddler programs too. Parks & Recreation Dept. of Henderson. My twins were always on the go when growing up here. Housing/apts. 2/3 bedrooms average $850-1,400 . Some nicer than others. Construction is on the rise again this year. Reno I know very little about. However, I had a friend that wanted a small town atmosphere, lower population and cooler weather so she moved herself and two kids there. Good Luck on your decision!
