My husband and I are looking for inexpensive retirement areas. Many people tell us that Nevada is the best and healthiest place to retire. If you are retired in Southern Nevada, please send us your opinions and what you like and don't like about retirement in Southern Nevada?
Thanks, HR Lady |

That said the places not in Las Vegas but in southern Nevada are relatively few in number. For retirement you have Pahrump to the west and Mesquite and coming soon Coyote Springs to the NW. There are also a dozen or so rural towns - Overton, Caliente, Beatty, Primm, Jean...Most are quite small and you have to be into the rural life style. Pahrump is about an hour to the west of Las Vegas and a good bit cheaper. Has a ruralish, libertarian bend. Maybe a little redneck. Mesquite and Coyote Springs are playing for the retiree. Coyote Springs is just starting and will be a significant small city if the plans succeed. Mesquite has a new Sun City going and is also golf oriented. There are areas in Las Vegas at about the same cost as Mesquite and Coyote Springs...Though such places will not have the same ambiance. They are however in Las Vegas. |

Forget Mesquite or Laughlin if you're looking for inexpensive places.
Pahrump might be good for that aspect. It has lower taxes in general and housing prices are more reasonable than if you were looking anywhere in Clark county. |

I like the SW in general and Las Vegas in particularly. I would have no particular problems living in any of the other major SW cities including CA though CA is tough on economic grounds. I like the SW for climate and the cities for their amenities. I enjoy an occasional show and eat out a few times a month. Vegas and southern Nevada is hot in the summer and cool in the winter. I like the heat but find Vegas colder than I like at the height of winter. Place is dusty...no two ways about it. At the peak of the heat you need to avoid the outdoors but that is actually a small part of the time. In the spring the winds can blow at high levels. Vegas and surrounds tend to be blue collar. The work is in the service industries such as the Casinos and hotels. Its upper middle class tends to be smaller than other cities. Pahrump tends to be more cowboy...a little redneck and libertarian. Land is much cheaper than Las Vegas and you can put up a manufactured home on your 1/2 acre. It is just over an hour commute to most places in Las Vegas. |

If I may, please. I think anyone considering moving to Nevada should visit Mesquite. My husband and I moved here a year ago after living for 7 years in Henderson, NV and 2+ years in St. George, Utah.
I think this is the best place in the world to live. We live in the new Del Webb community in Mesquite and just love it. We plan to stay for the rest of our lives here. We are seniors and have a lovely senior center plus many things to do. I think you should visit before making a decision. |

I understand, Liz, but like I said before, Mesquite is not the most inexpensive area to live.

LizF-
For those of us exploring southern NV and , in particular, the Mesquite area, how "senior" is the Del Webb community? |
