Thinking of moving to Gardnerville or Minden, NV
I'm seriously considering moving my family to the Gardnerville/Minden area. How are the jobs in the area for managers? I used to be a high level manager for a motorsports company and would like to find something in the automotive or marine fields. Carson city, Tahoe and Reno are close enough to commute.
It looks like a great area and has many the things we are looking for.
Are there any issues about living there that we should be aware of?

Expensive
Minden is beautiful...however real estate is very expensive. When you say that you can commute to Tahoe, beware that the mountain passes receive huge amounts of snow during winter and can be quite treacherous. Renos is now a one hour commute from Minden.

I would like to move to Minden/Gardnerville
Can someone tell me about the crime rate in those cities and what is the 'usual' crime? Also, I would like to know if you have any illegal alien problems or gangs? I know it's probably a stupid question, since the towns are small, but I must inquire. Thanks for the help!

Crime in Minden or Gardnerville? There is some there?
I got this data from Sperling's 'Best Places' website:
Quote:
Minden, NV, violent crime, on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 10, is 3. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The US average is 3.
Minden, NV, property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 10, is 4. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The US average is 3.

I am going to say that Minden and Garderville's crime waves are going to be about what you'd find in rural Vermont or Wyoming: "Those no-good Mitchell twins went playing mailbox baseball last night. We put in a call to their mom down at the Sheriff's department and she's gonna whip their hides but good when she gets home."
The US average is a '3', but that's factoring in a massive swath of empty rural America that drags the average down. Zillions of little burghs across America like Level Cross NC and Seneca KS have almost no appreciable crime rate to speak of. Cow-tipping and whatnot.
Minden and Gardnerville are just swell. Really pretty there too.

It seems to me that there alot of drug problems in small towns. I live in a small town in CA and there is a huge problem between marijuana and meth. The crime is low. My husband and I are also thinking about moving to Gardnerville in about 5 years and eventually retire there. From what I have read about Gardnerville online it does seem like a very nice place but one has to visit a place several times before one can make a decision to move there. I know that I would have to commute to either Carson City or Reno to work, and living in the foothills I understand well enough about the snow and mountain passes. Thanks to everyone that has put in their opinion about Gardnerville.

I live in Gardnerville and work closely with the law enforcement community.
Most "crime" involves property...theft of, damage to, burglary, etc. Behind that is probably domestic disturbances (Because some people just can't seem to get along.)
The most complaints after that are about kids on dirt bikes, kids being loud, or kids just being kids, or other neighborhood disturbances(loud music, reckless driving, etc). I don't mean to sound stereotypical but there is a high population of elders and retirees in the area, and they tend to have a low tolerance for disrespectful behavior. Understandable, but not really a crime.
There is some drug and gang activity, mainly due to an influx of people moving from larger cities (Sacramento and Los Angeles) and an ever-growing concentration of Hispanics. (Again, I am not trying to discriminate, only stating the fact that most gang-affiliated persons in this area are Hispanic.)

www.recordcourier.com <--The local paper has a lot of information as well
I don't know what exactly you're looking for in automotive/marine field, but we do have offroad motorsports and marine dealers in the area...locally as well as in Carson City and Reno. The average morning and afternoon commute to and from Reno is about an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. Carson City is about 20-30 minutes depending. Yes, there is snow on the passes to Lake Tahoe in the winter, but they are usually well-plowed and sanded for the major commutes, and RARELY close.
Check out www.trulia.com for a comprehensive list of homes for sale in the area. Be sure to search Minden and Gardnerville, as well as zip code 89705(Considered part of Carson City, however it lies in Douglas County.) If you are looking to rent, most decent apartments run about $900/month for a two-bedroom, and houses run about $1200-$1300 for your average three-bedroom/two-bath 1200-sf home.
Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at uscg21@yahoo.com if you have anymore questions, I think about covered it all here.

I too am interested in moving to Nevada.
Does the Minden area have any trees to speak of or does it have the typical high desert vegetation. I noticed it doesn't get much rain so I guess that negates any landscape except for low to no water use.
By the way, what is the water situation in the area? Does the area have a sufficient amount or does it fluctuate as does California?
