I am told the schools are good
I moved to Dayton in November, 07. I am semi-retired, and have no kids, so I don't have first hand knowledge of the schools quality. Go to Google Earth and look at the Dayton area maps. In the main area of Dayton, the elementary, middle and high school are all next to each other.
Housing prices have dropped quite a bit in the last year. There are some good deals, IMO. There are a few homes on the golf course that are bank repos that are going for almost 100K less than they cost two years ago.
I'm very happy with my choice to move here. It is quiet, no smog and no traffic. Just be sure you have a job before you get here (or don't need to have one).

Dayton is one of the few affordable areas left in Nevada, but with that said the schools are overcrowded and like all Nevada schools they are at the bottom of list on most school reporting web sites.

I've heard the schools in Virgiana City are excellent - and not far from Dayton.
There are 3 elementary schools in Dayton - Dayton Elementary, Sutro Elementary, and the newest, Riverview Elementary. I have heard good things about Dayton and Riverview. And I know the Principal at Dayton Elem. is VERY approachable.
I would be hesitant to move here with a teenager though as there just isn't enough for them to do, unless they have a hobby like horses or something. The high school has no tennis courts or swimming pool and there is not much in terms of parks either, although the community is working on that.
Overall, Dayton is a great place to live, especially if you are retired or don't have to worry about employment. The people here are friendly and hard working. You get all of the seasons without any extremes and the sunsets are amazing! Also, I think the healthcare is better than anything we had in California - the doctors here seem to take their time and are more thorough.
Yes, you have to travel to Reno or Carson City for MAJOR shopping (I like Reno better for that) but there is good and bad wherever you live and I think the payoff of living in a friendly rural community with very little traffic and low crime is worth the tradeoff of having to drive to Reno on occasion. There's always shopping by Internet too.
Good luck on your move!

Looking at moving to Dayton NV, too
Hi,
We are in S. Cal... thinking of moving to Dayton NV. We are both retired AF, but both have our own at home business (Mary Kay & Computers)... we are wanting to rent for the first year... anyone have any idea of who to contact about a rental. Looking for a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage.
Thanks

I can give you the name of a local real estate agent if you wish (it's not me). Send me a Direct Message since this board discourages crass commercialism. Or you can Google the Dayton Nevada Chamber of Commerce which lists many local businesses and sometimes even responds to emails. My golf buddy is retired AF and tells me the PX in Fallon is very nice.

Just wondering how things are in Dayton right now. I just read where home sales in southern CA are booming with people snatching up bargain priced homes. Is the same thing happening in Dayton? Are homes beginning to move again? I think the area is beautiful and am considering a move there. Thanks.

I have lived in Dayton over 3 years. I am still waiting for some better shopping options here. For most things, I travel to Carson City several times per week. There are not too many options for kids here. I have seen more for sale signs go up than come down. I have a special needs child and can attest that the health care here is substandard. Completely third world medical system here.
I still love the sunsets, the BLM land, weather (except wind) and quietness. But Dayton was on the fast track of growth - now a lot of areas that were graded for development, are being taken back by the sagebrush and desert. I would say growth has stalled out and most are waiting to see what happens. Dayton also wants to incorporate - but that's a tricky issue. Dayton could wind up in the red if they weren't extremely careful. Ruled by Lyon County with it's crooked base of commissioners - I wouldn't trust an incorporation at this time.
