Hello & Happy New Year-

I'm relocating to Vegas from N.C and I had plans on purchasing a car this month. Should I make my purchase in N.C and have it shipped to Nevada or wait until I get there to purchase? Also, I'm not too familiar with leases but I've been reading several articles about them. I plan on driving to CA often so I don't think that would be a good option for me.

How much money do you have burning a hole in your pocket? Shipping from NC to Las Vegas?

Just buy in Las Vegas. Bonus: No salted roads or sea spray, so no rusted out bodies. Double bonus: No sales tax if you buy from a private party. Double downer: the use tax is painful, and is based on the MSRP.

Thanks for the prompt response.

When I was in Vegas a few months ago I asked the a realtor I was working with his opinion and he said dealership fees and taxes are much higher in Vegas. "Cars are cheaper in NC, SC & Atlanta; you wouldn't be saving a ton but you'd get a better deal on a car in any of those states and you can ship it." I think he may have been referring to the usage tax you mentioned because he said $1-2 thousand in addition to the dealerships price.

My quote to ship was $910, but you brought up some of my concerns about transporting it. I definitely didn't want the paint or car damaged during the run.

When I said use tax, I misspoke. It's Nevada's version of it, but we stick it in registration fees. You'll pay it regardless.

Just for comparison purposes, it will cost me about $1100 to ship my 2015 Camaro to the Las Vegas/Henderson area from Chicago using an enclosed classic car transport. It's a little more than a regular car carrier but I like having the peace of mind knowing it's enclosed and shouldn't get damaged.

I priced out what my Nevada plates would run and got a little sticker shock when I saw they'd be $468 per year. Here in Illinois I pay $109, but we also pay tolls so it kind of evens out.

I have a couple of buddies in the So. Nevada Camaro Club and they meet every Saturday at Vegas Speed down by the M for their Cars and Coffee meet up. They've had some cool road rallies and I look forward to that, plus meeting some new friends including the people here.

I've tried to be as prepared as possible for the move and while you can't plan for every little thing, we have a pretty good idea of what we are getting into.

Where you purchase your car and where you register it is more than a cost consideration. Every state has registration and residency rules. I recommend you check out the NV DMV site and use it to guide your decisions.
