U.S. 50 "The Loneliest Road in America" questions
Hi all,
I finally got transferred approved from Colorado to Sacramento.
I plan to sleep in Ely, NV overnight before heading to Sacramento. This would be end of this month (around April 23, 24 or 25th)
My vehicle gets a bit more than 300 miles per tankful, I plan on fueling in Deltaa, UT and Ely, NV before refueling either in Fallon or Carson City.
1) How's the current road condition now?
2) Normally, what's the weather like during end of April? (Should I be concerned about spring snowstorm?)
3) Any motels in Ely?
4) Is there gas stops between Ely and Fallon (just in case)
5) Any fast food or any good diners in Ely? is there I-HOP in Ely so I can eat a good and big breakfast before hitting the road?
and LASTLY!!!
6) I pray the night sky will be clear in Ely...how's the night sky look? does it have zillions and zillions of stars I can look up with my naked eyes? If not in Ely, how far should I go away from Ely? 5 miles? 10?
Any other advices, it's more welcome! I'd like to try The Loneliest Road in America, U.S. 50 :-)
Thanks!
Thomas

Well, until someone comes along with better info, I will give u what I know.
Currently, I would say that the road conditions are fine. I am posting at 10:04 am and the temp in Ely is 32, looking for a high of 47 today. According to MSN weather, the lows towards the end of the month avg. in upper 20's, with highs in the lower 60's. You can go to MSN weather and look at their 10 day forcast as the time for your trip draws nearer.
As for motels. I found that there is a Best Western and a Ramada. Probably a few more but I couldnt think of the names of any other motels to google. I did google Days Inn and that site is where I found the Ramada.
Gas between Ely and Fallon: Yes...in Eureka and in Austin...EXPENSIVE.
I googled IHOP and Denny's and neither has a location in Ely. I do know that there is a McDonalds cuz I have eaten there.
I hope that this has helped you. The Ely paper, The Ely Times, has a message board. If you need more info perhaps someone there can help you.
Have a safe trip!

There's a Motel 6 in Ely on Hwy 50. There is also the Jailhouse casino and motel Jailhouse Casino which has a steak house and coffee shop.

Also check out the Ramada Copper Queen hotel and casino Welcome to Ramada Inn Ely, NV & Copper Queen Casino!. They probably have a coffee shop or restaurant where you can get a good breakfast. According to their website, there is a Subway, Arby's and McDonalds nearby in Ely.

Good feedback, becky and rat!
Yeah, you shouldn't have to worry about spring snowstorms at the end of April. I suppose hey could happen but I'd say it would be extremely rare.

About 11 years ago I relocated from the east coast to Las Vegas, Nevada. I remember only a little about the trip. I did stay in Ely for 2 days.
If I remember nothing else I do remember one thing that I will never ever forget if I live to a hundred. You mentioned the stars. I pulled over one night some place before Ely on some state highway I guess it was. I saw something in the sky I never seen before in my 50 years. There was a hundred trillion stars in the sky.
Normally on a clear night where ever you are you can count 5, 10, 15 stars. But the entire sky was nothing but white dots that night. It was just incredable.
Have a save drive and thanks for jogging that wonderful memory from the back of my head.

Yup, I agree with desertsun. IMO, I can't imagine you'd get any better view of the night sky than in northern NV. The lights of major cities are so far away and you'll be so isolated that it will definitely be an awesome sight.
It jogs my memory too when I drove from SLC to Reno in the middle of the night during my college days many decades ago. It was the first time in my life that I had seen so many stars in the sky ...a sight that sent chills down my back. Being a city guy, I wasn't used to that and it was such a shock. I remember it so clearly as if it were just yesterday. *sighs*
