Pahrump is a very small town. It is a pretty area. I'm not sure what the water situation is like in Pahrump - don't know if they source water from the Colorado or local wells. I was told by a local realtor friend that there have been some disputes with Nye County/the state over water rights on older properties.
Its probably fine for retirement. If you're looking for a nightlife of any kind/bars/restaurants I don't think you're going to find a whole lot going on there although there are a few things there like a couple of small casinos and some local restaurants.
There is a bunch of new development going on. I looked at houses in both the 55+ community and the other new communities they're building. The houses seem decent enough. The properties for the newer stuff were rather small and similar to the lot sizes in the newer parts of Las Vegas.
The older lots are much larger and have housing that's anywhere from trailer on slab to ramshackle shacks to "quaint craftsmans" to more modern style ranchers. If you look at something older, I would make sure to hire a good home inspector. It looks like there is little if any code enforcement and lots of off the books additions and whatnot that may or may not be legally built.
I assume a lot of the lots there are run by well and septic. Its probably worth it to get water testing done if there is a well on the property. I have a friend who bought a property with 2 wells only to find out a few months down the line that both have problems and were running dry and in need of a re-drill. Thats a significant expense you won't want to be blindsided by.
Its close enough to Las Vegas that its not a major expedition to get here but its not exactly "up the street" either. From the Mountain's Edge area it was about a 45 minute drive before the construction started on Blue Diamond. Part of the route to get there goes through the spring mountains and I don't know how passable the route is in inclement weather.

Heck I hate most people as much as the next misanthrope but life stuck in a small town with no or few 24 hour food options, no entertainment, nothing to see, just some little nothing town... no thanks. Agreed. I don't even like spread out suburban living where you need a car to drive 1 mile to the grocery store.

From Downtown Summerlin to central Pahrump is a good 70 miles and not the easiest drive. Parts of it are two lane no median with high speed drivers, (going past Red Rock/Spring Mountain Ranch) then there is the mountain pass section--overall it is not a drive most seniors would want to make regularly, especially not at night or in bad weather (monsoon season/snow season. I'm not a fan of Blue Diamond Rd either (if heading from LV to Pahrump from the Mountains Edge area instead.) Parts of the drive are really beautiful though.
