We love the casino shows. Roxy’s has great food but expensive so we wait for a show and get it half price. When I first moved here everyone that visited wanted to gamble so we did. Now we never do. My husband is a native and I have been here 23 years.

I could think of worse places ta live than Elko, NV. How about Sacramento, CA, for instance?

I’m on a road trip and camped overnight near Elko. Wow it’s really grown since I used to spend summers there decades ago! The city looks great to me.

We camped at a nearby reservoir and loved the Ruby Mtn views and beloved Nevada open spaces, privacy and freedom to hike along the shores with the dogs swimming and playing.

We might consider retiring to the area as we are looking for less crowded fishing and outdoor recreation spots. Although it’s hard to beat Northern NV for all around quality of life/lifestyle.

So we are going to move out of Elko in 4 months. Not just move but flee. What we have discovered since living here for the last couple years is that crime is very high. There was a shooting at the Idaho street McDonald's drive thru. A man from Winnemucca walked up and shot a 16 year old to death. Police can't figure out a motive. Look up the other open murder incidents on the Elko newspaper. People aren't even horrified about grisly crime here. It's just common and happens.

The amount of people refusing to wear masks is staggering.

Our dog became ill the other day and we needed emergency vet services. Elko Vet wanted me to download an app and pay $30 to video chat with an on call vet. After my attempts at calling - someone called back and used profanity at me. Today I have called every vet in Elko and Winnemucca and nobody will see us. The closest place we can take our dog is Salt Lake City. Even vets in Twin Falls have no appointments and have no suggestions.

That leads me to another issue which I have seen forming - it's who you know in this town. If you aren't a born and raised local, or part of the LDS system here, or have connections to others (casino owners), you are nothing and will receive nothing. I can't drop names - but I know one in particular that owns casinos here and throughout the state and he and his family gets highly specialized treatment and access to health care and other things that most do not. I have first hand knowledge of this.

We are done with trying to break into the "club" here. Our lives are at stake and we are getting out. You will be taken down reputation wise if you dare to challenge them or speak out. Trust me. I have no reason for making this up.

It's too bad things didn't work out but look at your original post and Elko turned out to be exactly what you said it was. And you moved there.

1. I learned what I learned about Elko AFTER I moved here.
2. Just up and moving isn't so easy or cheap. I have dogs and a special needs child.
3. Some of what I described about Elko could be said of must rural towns in Nevada.
4. I am going to renew my disbelief that most of Nevada has little to no mental health care, poor medical care, very high insurance rates and now....very bad and lacking veterinary care as we have discovered.

Oh I would move in a second but I have obligations to a lease which is too $$$ to break at the moment.

Again - what I said in my first post - I learned AFTER moving to Elko, not before. I did my research and none of it turned up all that I have experienced. So if my rants help someone else decide, then so be it. I still like parts of NE NV but sadly it's turning into a mess. (My opinion).
