Ely is definitely a commitment to a more isolated lifestyle. Also, my girlfriend that grew up there doesn’t miss the extremely short winter days. The town is nestled down in a canyon in such a way that the sun rises and sets early behind the mountains.

It looks a bit like Virginia City as many of the buildings are frontier originals.

There is a housing shortage in that area due to the mines attracting employees from outside the area. Those jobs can pay very well.

I was on one of my late night jaunts from Sacramento to Laughlin and was fried when I hit The Clown Motel.

Was hoping for clown motif , but only had a sad picture of clown on wall.

Drank myself to sleep.

I have stayed in every place in Tonopah.

That place in haunted, has a cemetery next to it and has been featured in at least one TV series and a host of newspaper articles.

At least Virginia City is closer to Reno/Sparks or Carson City to do the Costco runs and any needed amenities such as medical or dentist.

If you are referring to Ely or Elko those places are way out there and very very from Carson City or Reno.

I think Winnemucca is also from those areas mentioned above for medical and dental needs.

I was looking for cool, cheap, small houses... Hawthorne was unthinkable, Ely seemed pretty cool.. and birthplace of a great former First Lady.

And or
From Dayton to Carson City and Reno?
It depends where you start but assuming you are at the "Spaghetti Bowl" (80/580 interchange) it's a little over half hour east to Fernley, another half hour east to Fallon, about 40 minutes south to Carson City.

Fernley to Dayton about a half hour southwest, an additional 15-20 minutes to Carson City.
