Oh, they wish it was only $26 million. It's more like $26 billion.

I would like to know about Elko and the taxes there. What is the sales tax like. What is not taxed? A nice place to live in in Elko?

No secret death wish, no hidden, underlying ulterior motives. None of that. I just feel people would BENEFIT much more from getting the facts about a place, than from some sugar-coated "isn't my life grand" approach. I try and take in ALL the facts. If my own personal observations seem depressed and/or negative, it's probably because they back up or reinforce some FACT relating to a place. A reflection of my environment.

A critical analysis comes naturally for me, since I'm an artist. I'm an observer. I've trained myself to observe so as to make a better painting. Now as far as "good things about Nevada" goes....here's a few.

The air quality is amongst the best I've ever been around. At least in northern Nevada (Reno, Carson City). Spectacularly clear, windswept days, without a hint of pollution. Nice!! Some stunning scenery is to be found in northern Nevada, especially from Carson City down to Minden and Gardnerville. The mountains that cradle Lake Tahoe are a mere thirty minute drive from CC, where I live. Convenient, and a great getaway.

Lots of wildlife still to be found and experience in northern Nevada. I live in the so-called "nice" area of CC, with many restored Victorian homes, etc. The State Capital buildings and the Governor's mansion are all within a short walk. Grand, old trees grace most of this part of town. And many birds, from owls to red-winged hawks nest in the immediate area, and raise there young here.

My favorite, the white-tailed deer, who wander down from the Tahoe mountains to nibble on the tender, young shoots of various wild plants and bushes. Just amazing!! It's fairly common to encounter these animals around town here, especially in the early morning. Occaisionally, one sees herds of deer, sometimes ten or twelve at a time.

Othertimes, it's perhaps just a doe, taking her newborns for a "test run" in the environ's of small CC. Really feels special to see these native, wild creatures just wandering around, doing what they've done for millions of years! The young one's are especially cute to watch, as there watchful mothers herd them around.

Even bears wander into town, though I haven't personally seen one here in CC. They're on the local news fairly often. These are the things I like best about this area. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Do some research on this area, however, before moving here. My other postings, as well as other people's postings should give a good insight from those of us who've been here awhile.

As with most things...get the facts. Knowledge is the best teacher.

If taxes are your biggest concern, you need to figure out what you really want from a place.

Nature Guy,

You seem to have a lot of the same interests in where you live as I do.

I am originally from Southern California. In 2006, my husband, daughter and I moved to Atlanta, GA. It took a little bit, but after a while of getting my "sea legs", I really grew to love the area we live in. Our family is all back in CA.

In GA, we have a beautiful, brand new home, far beyond anything we could ever afford in CA. The schools are awesome. It is just a terrific place to raise our two little girls. My husband is in the Financial Services industry. I am a freelance writer.

Nature Guy, we are getting a whole lot of pressure from my mother-in-law to move back to CA. While I am loathe to do that, I may consider someplace like Henderson. While living in the red state that GA is, it was a bit amusing to see the McCain/Palin bumper stickers all around us. We are democrats, but not the "bra burning liberal" kind. Sort of middle of the road.

I guess I'm wondering what you can tell me about Henderson. I am NOT willing to move back to CA and end up with less than what we have here. But maybe NV is a good compromise. Would you raise kids in Henderson, NV?

Thanks Nature Guy!

Elizabeth

Considering a move to Elko? Look into Spring Creek. It's just down the road and is moregreen/closer to the mountains. Elko is tough for jobs...its usually either federal or mining or service jobs.

Lived in the area for three years
Nevada is one of the best places to wander/explore...Ruby Lake is highly recommended.
