Best small town in Nevada for Gardening/hunting?
I am a Colorado native, tired of the crowds, and considering retiring to Nevada. I am a serious gardener and bird-hunter. I'd like to live in a small town where I could grow vegetables (including tomatoes & squash), fruit (like apples, grapes, blackberries, etc.) and 2,000 sq. feet of turf for my dogs. This requires a lot of about 1/3 acre, adequate water, a growing season of some 100+ days, and a reasonable winter (say lows above -10).
I also like to bird-hunt Sept.-January, target-shoot, and do a lot of hiking with my well-trained dogs off-leash the rest of the year, so I want to be close to a lot of public land that is not overrun with persnickety people, rules and rattlesnakes.
But don't get me wrong - I like people alot. (There's just Too Many of us where I'm at, so everyone gets a bit testy on the little bit of open space we have.) I am very active in my community and close to my neighbors. I'd like to retire to an area where people are friendly and welcoming.
I am intriqued by Winnemucca, as well as the Reno area. Can anybody give me some feedback on the best towns in Nevada for my needs?
