Wink Good places in Nevada

I have lived in a few cities in nevada and the ones i liked the best were,Las Vegas,Elko, and Reno. Nevada has every kind of lifestyle you could want, only catch is you have to know what you want before you settle in and thats not much of a catch at all.I try not to condemn a city or state because i didn't understand the kind of people who decided to make it there home before i moved there,i think it is easier on everyone if you take the time to make up a list of places you might like and spend some time there before you decide to settle,i don't mean to berate any one just pass on some info i found works.popswatch

Yup.. if you hate Nevada so much.. no need to bash on-line (Unless you are part of that campaign to bash Nevada on-line that I have heard so much about) Please please please.. stay in California.. lol

Me Ill show you ny reply to your list..

1. Horrible Heat
(Yeah.. for a few months so what? Buy an AC unit and enjoy Unless you are one of those Californians who are "allergic" to AC.. yes folks.. there are freaks like that out there.. lol)

2. Hookers Galore
(Hell I live in a place where hookers are legal.. and I never see them.. lol)

3. Dessert = No scenery
(Desert Scenery suits me just fine.. it sure beats paying 2000 a month for a tiny postage stamp size apartment with a view of the water.. and earthquakes.. and illegals shooting up the town.. and drugs.. and so on)

4. Ugly little towns with disgusting bathrooms
(haha so you judge towns by the cleanliness of the bathrooms? lol)

5. Ranked 2nd most dangerous state (next to Louisiana)
(Skewed statistic thanks to Clark County car thefts.. No danger here.. everyone is armed and crime is low in my town)

6. Ugly campgrounds
(Please describe a pretty campground? LOL)

7. Mean people
(What do ya want.. we got to be as mean as possible to keep you Californians out. As an ex New York City resident.. I can assure you.. you do not know the meaning of "Mean People" hahah)

8. No history except VA city
(This one is funny.. any moron with a web browser and google can find tons of history in Nevada)

9. To overpriced
(Overpriced? Hahah see my comment about 2000 dollar a month tiny apartments in California)

10. Nothing but casinos everywhere. Even in chevrons!
(Oh Teh Noes! Not the "evil casinos"! Ahhh even in CHEVRONS! AHHH SAVE ME! oh wait.. never mind.. lol Just the fact that you said that tells me you are from California.. some Cali people HATE gambling and are trying to start up a movement to severely restrict it in Nevada.)

Default Losers Passing Through NV !

SimFam's original post is clearly indicative that ill informed retards occasionally visit and in this case, hopefully will continue to only be passing through the great State of Nevada.

This would be true anywhere! if everyone had a gun and can use it, burglars and robbers would think twice or even thrice! I'm all for that!

Nevada is a good place for political relocation by defenders of brothels and childfree activists sick of paying taxes for public schools. NO ZONING!

Yes, smoking is still legal in this state, in most places as it also is in many other states. However, that's changing little by little. I expect that it will go away, in most places, sometime in the future.

As for blowing it in "your face," I haven't seen that done, on purpose. I wonder if someone across the card table was trying to break your concentration . . . just kidding!

Sure they do. In fact, I want it too, if you want to give it to me. However, each person has direct control over that issue. Some choose to spend some money on gambling as entertainment, some choose to blow everything on it, others choose to not spend a dime.

In my case, only their buffets have ever received any of my money. I haven't even put a penny in any one of their machines or anything bills on their tables.

This is absolutely not true in all areas of the state. It's too broad of a statment. It will be true downstream from any of the old mining areas, but this state has a lot more area than that.

In my case, I'm down in Douglas County and the water is good. The ground water, and the streams, come fresh out of the Sierra Nevada and probably the bottom of Lake Tahoe. It's as clean as it can get.

Well, one is a pretty big city and the other is a bigger town. I wouldn't choose to live in either one, but I certainly wouldn't call Reno "overpopulated." It's just a growing place. In fact, I heard some people complaining about traffic up there, but what I've experienced during rush hour pales in comparison to what I've experienced in L.A., Atlanta, and the Twin Cities.

I would also say that Las Vegas is no more "overpopulated" than any other big city, be it L.A., Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Atlanta, or any other such place. They all have the same congestion and traffic problems to one degree or another. In fact, it's the population and the services that come with it that many people prefer, so it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a choice thing.

Yup, I've never understood how Las Vegas can grow as it has without the water resources in the area, but apparently they've been allowed to steal it from the more rural counties and other sources.

Conversely, I'm on County water down in Douglas County and guess what? There's not even a water meter on my house. We're charged the same small rate no matter how much or how little we use. That certainly doesn't sound like rationing, epecially without a water meter on the line.

I've also read the geology report on the land under my property. Our water table is 10' undergraound. That's close and it shows a lot of water. Perhaps it's our proximity to Lake Tahoe at the top of the hill, which also happens to be one of the deepest lakes in the world, so it certainly contributes to our water quality and quantity, but in any case our water use is not even being regulated.

Yes they did go up, but "very overpriced" is subjective. They're certainly more expensive than a lot of areas in the nation, but there's a price to pay to be near or in the Sierra Nevada mountian range, adjacent to Heavenly Valley skiing, and in a state that doesn't steal a portion of your paycheck through a tax on income.

In any case, the prices seem to have come down, as they have in many markets. Whether they have futher to go, have bottomed, or when they will go up again is a topic or another disucssion. In any case, "overpriced" may no longer be an issue or may simply remain a truth based on socio-economic factors that have, and will continue, to dictate the pricing.

That's not true. It's just like saying "crime rate is high" in the United States. It's too broad. Down here in Douglas County, the crime rate is low. The numbers prove it and my personal experience confirms it. I have never felt fear or apprehension being out in the evenings, anywhere in the towns of Douglas County.

If you happen to be looking at Las Vegas, all I have to say is compare it to any other tourist destination of comperable size. Between the population density and the people attracted to preying on transient tourists, you will see similar crime stats and issues. It has nothing to do with "Nevada" per say. There are many other factors.

I would agree with this statement, in general. This state needs to work on attracting more economic diversity. It already has the economic policies in place tomake it attractive for business. It just needs to address a few other infastructure issues and aggressively seek out corporations to expand or move to te region.

I'm not going to get into this one . . .

So, that's my take. It's a good state with different areas, with different benefis, for different people. To try to paint the entire area with the same brush does a disservice to the truth, IMO.
Garth...I love your logical and calm approach in responding. And I agree with you wholeheartedly! I wish I could introduce all the naysayers to the Nevada I know and love. Often times it just takes seeing it through the eyes of another. The smell of sage after a light rain; sighting a California Condor on the road out of Hawthorne, Nv; Wild Horse, Wild Burro's...Big Horn Sheep...awesome! And how about the many opportunities to just get away from it all? Nevada is one of the most geologically interesting states in the union! (Ok...so maybe Alaska and Hawaii have the edge on that one) Come see Nevada through my eyes! It's a wonderful place...you just need to adjust your focus!

I have owned homes in Santa Barbara, San Clemente, Hawaii, Del Mar.

Now...we have a house in Laughlin. We don't tell any of our snobby friends,(too tiring) we don't go to the casinos. We hike, cycle (yes long horned sheep ARE awesome!) and take breaks from all the consumerism and Uncle Sam. I am liking it.

I'm sort of over snobs that identify with where they live too much. Get out and see it all! The desert is very cool. I do carry a gun out there, he he. There are some strange rangers in the desert. if you don't like smoke..don't go where people hang out and smoke.
