Pahrump - A Few Specific Questions
This is it - we've done what research we could over the last six months or so, and have decided to pack up a rental truck and start driving from Ohio to Pahrump, NV at the end of this month. It's a little insane, but we plan to find a place to rent while we're there. But hey - we own our own business which will travel with us, have no kids, and are up for some adventure, followed by a nice quiet (and warm) place to live and work. I hope some of you will be kind enough to answer a few of these questions. Thank you so much!!!
1. What kind of bugs should we potentially expect in our new house, and (more importantly) which ones of those should we be scared of? Here in Ohio we get earwigs, crickets, and a few harmless spiders - nothing too exciting. But from what I understand, things might get a bit more interesting out in the Southwest.
2. While we are frantically checking out houses for rent, we'll need a hotel to stay in. All I've found so far are a couple casino hotels and a Best Western - are there any others? Which one is the least expensive, but still reasonably clean?
3. What's the best high speed internet service? The best I could find online is Keyon... are they decent, or should I be looking elsewhere?
4. Where's the best place to shop for groceries? I've seen that there's an Albertson's and a Super Wal-Mart... is there anywhere else?
If there's anything else that might be helpful for us to know (we're a mid-twenties no-kids self-employed couple who have done extensive research on the town but have never visited), please please let us know. Again, I really appreciate any help any of you can offer.
Thank you again!

Bugs? Spiders, some tiny scorpions, and such.. but if you exterminate you will be fine. I have never found a scorpion INSIDE my house.. mostly roaming around outside. Lots of crickets however.
Best western is nice. Pahrump Nugget is the best as far as I was concerned. We stayed there once while house hunting out here
Internet? Air-Internet.com CMA Cable (If you are in the area) and some areas also get ATT DSL service as well.
Had air internet now have CMA. We love it.
Groceries: Mostly Smith's, albertsons, and walmart. Smiths has decent meat, albertsons is kinda on the pricey side and Walmart is.. well walmart.. lol
Let me know if you need any other info. Wife and I have been here for about 6 years now and we love it.

Thank you Chinga! We are going to be arriving in Pahrump in the first week of November to start hunting for a place to rent... I appreciate all the info and advice, and if you have any other little tips for us, please let me know. Perhaps we will meet someday soon. :-)

Does CMA have a website? Or do you have a phone number? What do you know about the ATT DSL? We tried checking out the DSL for the area, and didn't get very far.
And, how tiny are the scorpians? Where do they like to hide, so I know what to look for. Not familiar with those critters!

Yup.. Cma is here.. Redirect
ATT Dsl is trying to roll out all over Pahrump, so no idea how good its going to be but CMA while more expensive is faster than DSL and has been flawless.
The only 2 scorpions I have found were both in my garage, both hidden near my solar battery array. One came running right out over my hand when I lifted up an inverter AcK! but it didnt sting me.
They ARE tiny ones.. mostly bark scorpions.. small little brown ones.. and they are not running all over the place.
We use a pest control company he comes once every 2 months and we have no issues. Bear's pest control.. its 22 bucks every time they come and they do a good job.
Get yourself a blacklight for your garage, they glow in the dark under black light

We use ezznet.com for internet (it's internet via radio frequency - kinda cool), and are very pleased with them so far, although CMA might be a better option if you live in an area of town that they service. ezznet.com is pretty cheap too, at least compared to many of the alternatives out here, and there are no upload/download limits. It's no good if you're a gamer, but we find them entirely adequate for basic surfing - definitely much much faster than dial-up, but not quite as fast as some cable internet providers I've used in other parts of the country.
As far as bugs, we have yet to see ONE scorpion, and we have lived here since Nov '08. The entire valley does however seem to be infested with these gigantic hideous beetles though (our dog seems to think they're chicken nuggets), and we do see a pretty decent number of wind scorpions (which are actually spiders with a nasty bite but no venom). We use Buggs Bennett Pest Control to spray for bugs - $27 a month - and the few bugs that we do see inside are house are usually quite dead. Great customer service too... Family run place, we enjoy being their customers.
