Animals in the Ruby Mountains?
Are there any bears or moose up in the Ruby mountains? I will be hiking up there and was wondering just in case i need to bring my 500 or 45-70 for self protection.
also are there any hiking classes or clubs in the winter up in the rubys? I always wanted to hike up in the mountains with my snow gear. ANy suggestions with that?
Thanks,

I have backpacked in the Rubies and spent a couple of nights camping in the mountains. I didn't really notice any animals except deer. I don't know if anyone hikes up there in the winter - it's really COLD. There is a Humboldt Nationa Forest office in Elko that has info and maps.
Another place in the area worth visiting is Ruby Lake, also known as the Ruby marshes http://www.nevadadventures.com/recsi...akerefuge.html. It's a large marshy area with lots of geese and is suppose to be a good area for hunting (which I don't do). The fishing is suppose to be good also.

I did some trail running in the rubies, we used to live near them. Just coyotes, deer, badger here and there.
Fun for snowshoeing... if you don't have a pair, go get some. I go from trail running and hiking to snowshoeing in the winter.

Mulies, elk, bighorn, mountain goats, coyotes, badgers, chukar, grouse (Hun and Blue), snowcock (maybe) and mountain lions, but no bears, moose or wolves.

I have seen bighorn sheep and mule deer in Lamoille Canyon at or around 8000 ft.
