I was thinking about this the other week...now I know that the Elko area is pretty close to the Bonneville salt flats...I was wondering if this salt somehow lifts within the area and effects things...mostly engines and growing plantlife.

In the northeast salt is used to melt the roads and in the process also get cars looking quite bad..the big dig has problems and the leaks in it are salt water which I know can be corrosive. To compensate for this much of the metal work by the sea is made of galvanized steel. However there's warnings on some of the chemicals about cancer causing agents. Higher than this is stainless steel and that's a good $10-11/lbs

Is there a deal of salt in the air and if so what impact does it have?

Nevada has plenty of salt flats, nothing like Bonneville, but since most of the streams evaporate, they leave minerals behind. Another factoid, the reason Nevada air is not as clear as AZ and NM is the alkalai dust blown up from the dry lake beds into the air.

Though not as famous as Bonneville, the Black Rock Desert, which is near Gerlach and site for the Burning Man Festival, is a very nice salt flat to run. The Brit who broke the sound barrier accomplished it on the Black Rock rather than Bonneville because the salt flat is better (longer as well as smoother) for setting a land speed record.

Regarding the alkalai dust in the air be sure to keep your window wash fluid in your vehicle full and carry plenty of extra (it can be long way between watering holes) because when it starts to rain you will have a beautiful light green mud on your windshield that you can't see through.

Which chemicals? Are you talking about chromate conversion coatings applied to metal to prevent rust? If so, the risk is minimal.

Even stainless won't stand up to salt for long.
