An interesting book you may enjoy is; Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. "They" say that every westerner should read it in order understand their own West. It starts out in New Almaden.

Cinnabar is a common occuring rock in the coast range, there are cinnabar/quicksilver mines throughout the range from SF south to LA.

Years ago there were fish warnings because of the mercury found in Salmon, then they found a Salmon in an old Chumash indian site, same level of Mercury, so it has been around a long time.

In Reno a kid busted open a barometer at the High School the clean up was $28,000. but when I was a kid we busted thermometers and played with the mercury frequently. I appear to be alive and healthy.

Could I get details on zoning in Pershing County, or any NV county? Why do mineral rights matter to zoning? Are you implying that the limestone mine company was intending to mine OTHER PEOPLE'S LAND?????
I suppose in that case zoning and property rights would be on the same side for once.

Default Pershing County Building and Planning

Zoning allows for Land use, If someone owns the mineral rights to your land they can mine the minerals.

Having said that in most cases it's not profitable to do so.

You simply have to find out where your land is and if there are someone
that owns mineral rights to it.

The cement plant was Nevada Cement wanted to mine Lime out of a
area outside of Lovelock.

The reason the county did not go with Nevada cement was that it started out
with them moving here and building a plant here.

After all kinds of red tape the project dwindled down to simply taking the lime and sending it to their old plant outside of Fernley buy rail
while only offering 14 new jobs.

When it comes to air quality the air out here is as clean as it gets
mines are so far away.

Our water is also clean.

That is so good to hear, the air out there does appeartobevery clear and clean. I will be building out at Rocky Canyon this summer and looking forward to it. Here in Alaska we have clean air as well, we get dirt in the air due to sand on the roads but wind blows and it cleans up well.

zoning limits housing density and makes housing unaffordable, so I hate zoning.
