Nevada's open spaces are disappearing....
My son and I went out on a little expedition yesterday to an area of public land in Lyon county. I hadn't been out to this particular valley ( Adrian Valley to be specific) in ohhh about 4 years or so. To our chagrin we found that the areas we wanted to go have been fenced and posted. . This is not the only place that this has happened either. River access on the East Walker has been cut off in all the spots I rememer stomping around as a young lad also. BLM land southeast of my house has been fenced off and posted by mining interests and Hilton Inc. is the culprit on the east Walker river country. I'm checking on who the ones in Adrian Valley are, it's some LLC with a name I don't recognize so I'm trying to find out who they are and how they managed to cut us off from public lands. It rather disturbes me that my son won't be able to enjoy the same places that I did growing up. It seems our state is being bought up and methodically hacked to pieces by so many outside interests that we won't be able to enjoy what was once wide open range ,where you could ride your horse for a week without seeing a fence, any longer. It breaks my heart to see this. Whats to be done , if anything, I wonder. The government wants to cram a whole slew of "wilderness areas" down our throats, and in the same breath allows private interests to fence off our public lands. Any one else have any thoughts about this?

Similar things are happening here in Montana also. Plum Creek Company and the checkerboard ownership pattern is creating easement issues as Plum Creek has been selling off parcels to developers.

I think its more the latter. From my understanding, there is a big movement to screw environmentalism and such...and open things up to private interests and development and corporations...
The corporate lobbyists have been having a field day in Washington the last 8 years, from my understanding of things.

The corprate wh@res have been on a rampage. That's what happens when you appoint the fox to run the hen house. Now we're reaping the rewards.

Regretfully, I must agree. It is a bloody shame. I hope we can undo some of it.

The universe is over 99.99999999999999999% open space. Economic development is far more important.

In California, the Marines are considering taking some BLM land known as Johnson Valley. This is prime off-road territory, with some of the best rock crawling opportunities in the country. It's also widely used for other recreational activities, motorized and non-motorized.

A proper balance between economic development and environmental conservation seemed to be entirely lost on the current administration. The big oil, gas, and coal lobbiest get their way and to heck with any conservation of the public lands. This can be mitigated somewhat through renewed conservation efforts by using GIS technology to map important areas that should not be developed.
