Yep, Been there many times when traveling from Iowa to Las Vegas.. I use I-80 West from Iowa to West Wendover, Nevada. The traveling time on road from West Wendover to Las Vegas is little at least 5 hours. So NVDave is right about driving time and directions (short cut) to Las Vegas from Ely is 3 hours.
Yes, I am aware of Nevada Highway Patrol are storming all over in Pahranagat Valley area (towns of Hiko, Ash Springs and Alamo). A Cop stopped me in Ash Springs last year November with a warning 42 in 30 zone passed the convenience store going south. Geesh! However, that cop is nice not as I expected.
Beware of that area and watch out closely! Have a nice drive!
