I recently found an opportunity working for one of the mines near Elko, NV. I understand that this is a small town, and there isn't a lot to do. But I like the outdoors, so I'm alright with that. But I do have a couple questions...

1) What are the prospects for a mid-20's single guy in Elko? Are the many singles around, or is it basically just families?

2) Is the culture pretty much just West and mining? Are there and Mediterranean/Thai (etc) restaurants, or just chains and "country cooking"? What is the overall feel of the town?

Thanks for any help!

Hi there. My dad is retiring from Newmont in two weeks. I went to highschool in Elko. Spent a bit of my adulthood there as well. It's mostly casinos, bars. Basic restaurants. Chinese restaurants, no Thai unless they put one in recently. Basque and mexican food. I think it's pretty there, the Ruby Mtns are gorgeous. Winters are long and cold.

Single in Elko.. ehhh. I'm sure there are other single folks there, heck this girl was one. Careful of gold diggers. Some women see a miner and think $$$. I saw that enough. I met my guy there though. We're now in Reno.

Best wishes! Just be prepared to do some driving if you want good shopping, or a really nice restaurant. But it's a neat little town, I sometimes miss it.

I've been to the Fire Fighting School in Elko a few times, as for restraunts "from a tourist point of view" the Basque restraunts are outstanding, I went to two different ones down behind Stockmans....Around the corner is a club called the Horseshoe that has some entertainment for guys....Seems to be a lot of girls, but they all are looking for away out of there.....

OK, this is an old thread, but I will answer because there was little information about Elko when I moved here... The diversity of restaurants in Elko is limited. I know of two Chinese restaurants here in Elko, but one is quite bad (although the girl at the counter is nice). There are no "real" Asian restaurants that I know of. The Basque restaurants that everyone talks about are good, but expensive, and not a place that 20 somethings will visit too often. One decent place that is unique is the Cornish Pastie shop (like Irish beef pies without so much gravy) on Idaho and about 1st. Ruby Station Diner is also decent.

Overall, Elko is like a rural suburb, except it has casinos and brothels. Compared to the cities, people are more likely to drive ATVs, horses, or dirt bikes, but few people seem to ride bicycles or hike in the desert on the edge of time. Guns are also popular, but ammo is expensive. There is a free gun range one exit south of Mountain City Highway.

As for singles, it is not much different than elsewhere, but you would be more likely to go on an elk hunting date or ATV date then you would be in NYC.

This town is NOT what it once was. AT ALL. went out there to this town myself as a young 18 yr old and worked in spring creek while the friend i was with got a job at the carlin gold mine (at the time). first of all when i went back out there last fall to visit (09) i freaked out how much pricier things were (i remember landing a decent room in a hotel summer of '74 for 5-8 dollars. a local call from a pay phone was nickle. etc etc. now walmart has invaded. i found it is still NOT the place for the young even today...which is why i left that fall and joined the army. actually i was outright lonely out there. VERY--to the point i jumped on a bus back home. The town was ok back then...although lonely for the young....but the town actually sucks worst today because those folks out in spring creek are losing their homes they bought over their heads. the flavor of the town might initially appeal to one at first glance then you realize a real city is salt lake hundreds of miles away. if you want thai restaurants you're better finding one of those in california. hope this helped
