I don't live there, but I have visited Hawthorne a couple of times. I thought the place was kind of quiet with little to do there except hang out at the El Capitan casino. The weather in the summer is usually in the 90's.

It's time to make plans for some more travel once the weather warms up. I'd like to know about Walker Lake. Can you swim in it? Are there places for a picnic?
I'd also like to know more info on Hawthorne. Yes I know it's a small town but that is fine with me. I know there is a weapons depot at the edge of town, and that's alright. Does everything close up early there? Is the weather nice during spring? Are there some places to eat in town?

Hi Waterlily. There are some pics of Walker Lake that I took in the picture thread. I like the lake but as you can see there aren't any trees. You can swim and there are covered picnic tables.

hawthorn is horrible, desolate place. i hated it there. nothing to do, 1 grocery store safeway. lots of druggies but that is everywhere now a days. hawthorn is kind of a dirty run down town. very old buildings. walker lake is a strange lake many stories about walker, i have heard that they have never found the bottom of walker and that the coast gaurd had put a sub down there and when they got so far down they saw fish the size of cars. i know many news reports of people dieing in walker ending up in pyramid lake i think or it was another lake i cant remember which one. another story about walker is the native people there say there is a monster on the bottom of the lake, and the lake moans, it also turns itself over alot and it looks really nasty when it does and smells.

Thanks for directing me to the pictures verynicebecky. Yes the lake looks good. if there is a monster in the lake I hope he'll show his face while I've got my camera handy. I expect I'll take trip down there, and check it out. I'll probably stay a couple of days to get a good look around the lake and the city.

Hi,
Thought I would chime in on your question, I have lived in Hawthorne for meny years, I love it here. But I do have to admit that there isn't alot of things to do here, in less you'r in to quad/motorcycle riding, hunting or fishing, shooting, gost towning, four wheeling, horse back riding, water sking/boating or camping. but if you not into the outdoor activitys you might be disapointed. Hawthorne is a small town, very layed back. none of the big city problems here.
Weather is great, winter is cold but no snow, maybe once a year. sumer are warm but dry. spring and fall are just great. Home prices are well below state avg. rents are equaly cheep.
Most work is at the base if you have a criminal record or any thing that would muck up a security clearance you might be out of luck as far as employment. There usualy hiring for security guards, munitions handlers, vehicle drivers.
Not alot as for entertainment, we have three restaurants, one crape little move theator, no first releases. but Fallon is only an hour away.
I would sugest that you come and spent a couple of days here and see for your self..

What is most memorable to me about Hawthorne is I drove through there a few years ago during the month of May and everyone had the most beautiful roses in their yards.
