We get irked at hearing "Ne-VAH-da." My brother-in-law says it that way to get under my skin. It works.
RedWingsFan has it right -- the middle syllable has the same A sound as "cat."

It is Ne-vah-da..the 'a' in vah is the same as the note in( doh ray mee fah soh) LA<<<<----
I'm a local and I say Las Vegas, saying Vegas is definitely a tip off that you have not lived here very long.
It makes me look at the person saying 'Vegas' as someone TRYING to act cool.

If you Ne vah da, you are either an easterner or from Vegas
it is Ne Vaa Da as in apple.
You can say it however you want, you can also drive a Land Rover,, and wear LL Bean. But,, you will be marked as an outsider.

How to pronounce Nevada
As a 5th generation Nevadan, I can assure you that the correct pronunciation is Nuh vaaaaah' da. We do not prounouce it like they would in Spanish and it grates on the ears of anyone who hears it pronounced incorrectly. The quickest way to for a politician to lose an election, is to come here and pronounce the name of the state incorrectly!

In response to DaJudge, you may be living in Las Vegas, but you haven't been there very long. You are pronouncing the name of the state incorrectly, and it is perfectly okay to say Vegas. Nevada was a well established state before anyone but the Mormons thought of moving there.

For "Easterners" migrating to Nevada, also please be advised that the letter "R" is no longer silent. Transplanted Las Vegas attorney Glen Lerner continues to say "If you have been injured in a caa accident . . . " on his TV commercials.

pow tato???? who pronounces it that way?
Again, out of curiosity, is it true what DaJudge says about native Las Vegans pertaining to saying "VEGAS?"
Do any natives ever just say "VEGAS?"
Is it really a tip off that you're not from Las Vegas if you just say "vegas?"
