Others have already said it, but it's "neh-VAA-da" -- with the "A" in the second syllable rhyming with "flat." My brother-in-law, who's lived in the Great Lakes region his whole life, says "neh-VAW-da" just to annoy me. When he asks if I'm taking any trips to NeVAWda soon, I say, "No, but I am going to Nevada."

Some sheeps say bah, and others say baa; but Na-vad-a although not correct in Español, is correct en Inglés. And Nee vah da, like them eastern dummies and Californians pronouce it, grates on us Nevadans' nerves. It is also very corect for someone who has lived in Las Vegas for a long time to refer to it simply as Vegas, just as people from PA can call Philadelphia "Philly" if they want to. Neither is ok to say if you just drove up. But it is not the same faux pas as dudes referring to San Francisco as Frisco.

I am from Pennsylvania, and i pronnounce it Nah-vah-da, if you want one to try to pronnounce, try pronnoncing my county, Schuylkill (pronnounced, skookull) not Scool-Kill, or as some pronnounce it, and i don't even think i am spelling this one right, Schueeel-kill county. Have fun with that!!

Not all easterners silence the R, that is an accent of the Upper north east, Boston, new Hampshire, Vermont, Maine,Rhode Island, and Connecticut, In the central East, (New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey) The R is definatly presant we dRive our Cars to the paRk afteR DaRk.
The further down the coast you go, the longer the R gets drug out. For instance, and a souther droll to the word CAR and you get CAHRRRHa
Nomatter where you live, Each area of the US has its own accent, Where one place might say You All, an other might say y'all, and here in the coal region of PA we say Yuz. And since we have so many Coal Mines around here, when you say Mine, you are talking about a Hole in the ground that coal is taken from. If you are speaking Possesivley, the pronnunciation is
Myan (like the Myan Temples in South America)
If the way a person speaks, due to thier geographical location,"drives you nuts", Don't be rude to them, just let them know what the "correct" pronnunciation of the word is, Or ask them why they say a word like that, or we can just accept them for who they are, because That is what makes everyone so different! And thats what I love about this nation!
