I'm told that native Nevadans do not pronounce it as it would be in Spanish, in other words, Nah-vah-dah.
The correct pronunciation according to those born here is "Nuh vaaaaah' da. I've always pronounced it that way even before moving here but I just wondered if anybody born in Nevada pronounces it the way it should be in Spanish? --'rocco Last edited by scirocco22; 08-18-2008 at 11:36 AM. |

The outsiders supposedly pronounce it "nuh vaugh (as in caught) duh. The President evidently pronounced it Nuh-vaugh-duh when making a speech during his first visit to the state as president and caught a lot of flak for it. And, in my first post, when I said "the way it would pronounced in Spanish" I really meant the way the middle syllable is pronounced in Spanish. If the whole thing were pronounced in Spanish, it would be Neigh-vaugh-dah or Neh-vaugh-dah, correct? --'rocco Last edited by scirocco22; 07-10-2006 at 09:25 PM. |

Ah, thanx, Lee. That's just who I wanted to hear from, a true native Las Vegas Nevadan.

It's NevAAADa ...and not the other. I cringe when I hear people say it wrong...

I've always pronounced it "nuh-vah ("a" like in cat)-duh." Maybe that's why the natives think I'm one of them. They always tell me that someone living in Nevada that pronounces it "nuh-vau (like in the "au" in australia)-dah stands out as being an outsider, a non-native, not born or raised in the state. I just wanted to confirm that is all. So far, Lee thinks it doesn't matter and RedWingsFan cringes. Anymore natives want to chime in? --'rocco Last edited by scirocco22; 07-13-2006 at 03:42 PM. |

I was raised in Nevada. Lived there 14 years in Incline and Genoa. Loved it. Only people that aren't very familiar with the state pronounce it Nevahhhhda darling. It's so sophisticated....and gay.
