Tortoise, those are some great snow pics for Mesquite. I just now noticed them.
I miss that town at times..I used to go there alot when living in Utah, but only go once in a blue moon when the Arizona lottery is high, we drive to Beaver Dam, and it just happens to be on the way. Still a great little town up there.

You do not cross the Hoover dam to get from Bullhead to Las Vegas, you just cross the local bridge into Laughlin and go up the highway into Las Vegas. To go over the bridge would add about 40+ miles to your trip. The bridge will not effect the Bullhead/LV trip.

They are advertising Golden Valley/Kingman as a bedroom community to LV and over 200,000 homes are already approved. It will still be over 100 miles, nearly 120 miles from the 30k+ home development in Golden Valley, on a road with a 65 mile per hour limit. But at the same time, trucks will now be allowed to travel this route and that will probably slow the traffic down.

We actually chose to move to Kingman in 2004 to retire. By the time we arrived in 2005, housing prices had doubled and tripled in less than a year. We are renting and waiting. We have also visited Mesquite and like it, but housing is out of control there also.

I think prices have got to come down in Nevada and Arizona. Prices went up because of speculators not normal buyers. In Kingman the locals have been priced out and that can never be a good thing.

If you start checking price per square foot, there are a lot of small towns in California that are less expensive than Arizona or Nevada. Kingman says they are so much less than California because they have houses for 200,000. But the houses are very small, 1100-1200 square feet. These same houses were 80,000 to 100,000 two years ago.

I think the next couple of years will see lots of price reductions in all three states.

I agree with you on the mistakes given in the directions. As a resident of Kingman,can you give me any advise pertaining to a poss. move there ? My wife and I currently live in No.West Ind.and I want out ! She's coming around too. I have checked out Laughlin and Vegas,Phoenix and Kingman too,But can't make a choice as yet. Hi!

I'm Rich (wish I really were,) and am new to the board.

Have read your many comments, so wanted to post and ask a few Qs if I may.

I am 58, and newly, "forcefully retired" from Intel (i.e. fired - my job soon going to Vietnam,) so am looking for somewhere to retire to. I'm now getting a monthly stipend from Social Security (I have poor hearing and a slight heart problem, so I now get SSDI) so that, combined with a little savings each month, will give me about 2G's per month "take home pay."

I learned of Mesquite from a just bought "Golf Passport" (I'm a poor floger, but enjoy it nonetheless) - a course in Mesquite being one of those mentioned for a discount. The pictures of the course were beautiful, so I started checking out Mesquite - which also appears to be beautiful (at least from the pics on the Chamber of Commerce website!)

It seems rent is at least $200 less there than I pay here in Colorado Springs, and I DO like the idea of local casinos and courses - and that I'm only about an hour away from Vegas. (I'm not a big gambler, but LOVE the glitz, restaurants and discounted/free entertainment in places like that.)

So I'm now seriously considering moving to Mesquite at the end of October(when my lease here runs out.)

I will, of course, pay a personal visit to the town before deciding, but so far it sounds very nice. So if I may, I'd like to ask a few Qs off the top of my pointy head for some preliminary information:

1. Are there decent apartment houses or rental condos there? I've found it difficult to find much info on rentals there (everything is, "Homes for sale!"). I'd like a nice 2bm apt or condo w. pool. I did find a few apts listed that looked decent, and a 2bm was about $700/mo. Does that sound about right to any of you - and could you give me the names of some of the nicer apt/condo rentals there (if any?)

2. I know there's golf there - but is it reasonably priced? I know of some courses here in CO that want $200 per round. I'm afraid it might be the same with a course like Oasis. Can one regularly play the courses in Mesquite for reasonable green fees?

3. I KNOW it gets hot there in the summer - and I hate intense heat!!!! Can't stand Phoenix because it's 100+ about seven months of the year (and 115+ at least three of those months!) But I could stand Mesquite if it was hot for only three or so months a year.

There has been much mention of the heat, but is that 116 degees for every day of the summer, or just now and then?

I can stand being out in the 90's (at least temporarily,) so are there any days in summer that are only in the 90's?

4. Is the Cost of Living there reasonable? It seems to be as far as rents go, so I was wondering if it is that way in general.

I have checked out some of the restaurants in the casinos, and most of the meals appear to be between $15 and $25 - or less. So that doesn't sound bad at all as long as the quality is good (Vegas quality?)

And I see there's a Wal-Mart there and a Costco nearby - so that means reasonable groceries.

So if there are any other good deals with living in Mesquite, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

I probably wouldn't like Mesquite if it were 1,000 miles away from Vegas and didn't have it's own nice resorts and restaurants - but so far it sounds wonderful!

Only you can determine if Mesquite is compatible with your personal preferences.

Desert Winds (desertwindsapts.com) is a "lower density" apartment community with garages.

The majority of local golfers feel that others should subsidize their hobby with a city-operated course . . and strangely those running for elected office seem to agree. It's doubtful the citizens will be allowed to vote on this issue. Citizens did vote on a new library initiative a few years ago and it was defeated.

Mid May and afternoon highs are already in the 90's . . do outdoor activities early in the morning.

A frugal person can always adapt . . older "high density" apartment community . . 35 mph 4-lane main thoroughfares are moped (dmvnv.com/motorcycle.htm#Mopeds) friendly. Those seeking "value" housing will probably be disappointed, but it's all relative.

One thing that's just come up...

Someone on another board told me that they stayed in Mesquite for one night in June, and there was a terrible dust/sand storm.

Does that happen often there? Is it often terribly dusty?

I ask because I have a damaged eye, and if I get dust in it, it feels like gravel - and usually takes a day to work itself out.

If there's a dust storm only occasionally, then I can live with that - but not constantly blowing sand and dust for months on end.
