'rocco,
Thank you once again! Yes, I would have liked staying at the Casa Blanca - but it was almost $90 per night, whereas Falcon is $50 per night. I couldn't justify Casa Blanca with that high of a rate. I've read several VERY positive reviews on Falcon, so am looking forward to it. Will definitely check out the Oasis -and maybe their buffet. Thanks again! |

Hi again,
I was wondering if anyone who rents in Mesquite could recommend some good apartment complexes there that I could check out when I visit June 4th? 'rocco and tortoise did send me some good info on a few places that looked nice, but it is still difficult to find much detailed info on apartments there. So far I've found, "Millstream," "Rancho Mesquite," "Mesquite Bluffs," "Mesquite Springs," "Sun River," "Sun Valley," and "Summerwinds" - but there's almost no information about them other than an address. I am hearing impaired so I can't call them for info. So could anyone recommend any of them - or others (or let me know if there's some to definitely avoid?) Thank you. |

'rocco (and anyone else interested,)
Hi! I am in Mesquite as I type this, and you asked that I give you a report on how I like it - so here it is! ![]() Well, can you tell me - is today a typical windy day here, or unusually windy/dusty?! I saw clouds of dust blowing around everywhere this morning! I've had one person tell me this happens pretty often here, but three others told me this is not normal (normal is breezy at times, but nothing like the 30-40 mph winds I was just out in.) My bad eye started burning after about a half-hour out in the wind and dust, so I got pretty discouraged about the possibility of moving here. But a couple of the hotel staff then told me that this only happens when a storm is coming, and that it usually isn't anywhere near as bad as today is. I'd appreciate any comments on this you might give. My general opinion of Mesquite is good - BUT IS IT EVER DIFFERENT FROM COLORADO! EVERYWHERE you look - BROWN (except for the golf courses.) Might take some getting used to. Falcon Ridge is a VERY nice hotel! Not only is it reasonable, but also it is new and more elegant than some rooms I've been in in the big Vegas resorts. It also gives one some very nice little extras - like the free breakfast that comes with the room. This morning they had very nice mini-cheese omlets, french toast, hash brown cakes and excellent bacon. There's also the usual selection of cerials, rolls, bagels, coffee/teas, etc. So that alone would cost one $6-8$ minimum (without tip so when it's factored in, the room is a real bargain. So it's been very nice staying here.I tried to have dinner at Vigin River's buffet last night, but I got there late (got into town late) and it closed at 9 - so had to skip that. Then tried to go over to Eureka and to "Gregory's," but it too closed at 9. Eureka was having a Chinese buffet till 10, and I was afraid that anywhere else I went might also close at 9, so I tired their buffet. I can't say it was great, but it was alright - especially the wok station where a guy made up fresh shrimp and vegatables, so that made it pretty good overall. Driving around I noticed that the "Buffalo's" is just down the street, so will probaby give that a try tonight, and I'll let you know how it is. I checked with Jensen RE this morning and it appears that renting a condo is the way to go in this town - the apartments being pretty poor. I checked out the outside of a nice one called, "The Falls," and liked it and the area very much. One of the people I talked to said that - in general - areas north of the freeway are nicer than those south - and from the driving around I did that appears to be true. The Falls is just off Pioneer, north of the freeway, so if I do move here in a few months, it will be top on my list of rentals. I'm now going over and visit Casa Blanca and Oasis and see what they're like. I'll write another report tonight or tomorrow and let you know how "Buffalo's" is. Please let me know about today's winds - do they happen often like this, or just on days like this where a big storm is blowing through? Thanks. |

Thanks 'rocco.
Yeah, I talked to a few more people who also said they'd never seen it like this. One woman said it does blow pretty good from mid-May through mid-June - but never this bad. She said the rest of the year it might get a little breezy, but not the mini-hurricane we had today. I was driving on Pioneer about 8PM and there was dust as thick as fog blowing across the road for a mile. I just hope it didn't sandblast my truck! So it's just my luck that I came on this damnable day. But I'm glad to hear that it's not like this all the time, and I will still consider moving here. On another matter regarding bad luck, you can forget about "Buffalo's." I had dinner there and regret it very much. I had mixed grill of a (supposed) small top sirloin and about six small grilled shrimp. The shrimp were good, but the (supposed) sirloin tasted more like a piece of fried liver. Just terrible. Along with that came a small portion of Mexican rice, and a few grilled vegatables on a skewer. No salad (an additional $5.00, if one wants it.) $16.00. Iced tea was $2.50. So it cost me $20 and I was almost as hungrey after eating it as I was before. So don't waste your time or money. Well, I'm pushing on to Vegas tomorrow for a couple days, and then to visit a friend in Phoenix starting Friday. I have to admit that about the only really good thing about my trip so far has been staying at Falcon Ridge. Otherwise it's been pretty crappy. Oh well! I was going to just relax in Vegas, but now am thinking of checking out Henderson a bit - seeing what it's like. It's close to Vegas, but it's apartments are significantly lower rents (from what I can tell by my preliminary research, anyway. Might also take a drive over to Laughlin, to check out rentals there. So we'll see. Anyway, thanks for your help and info. It wasn't your fault it was a day from Hell. ![]() |

Hi again, 'rocco.
Got back Friday from my visit to AZ and NV. As for my further NV adventures: I found out that Henderson is still too close to Vegas for any decent rates on apartments - most good ones being the same rents, or only slightly less. So that was a disappointment. (I was born and raised in "El-Lay," so traffic doesn't bother me a bit. I was 'baptized by fire," so to speak. )On the other hand, I briefly visited Laughlin (pretty much for lunch and a quick look around) on Friday, the 8th (on my way to Phoenix) - and liked it very much! I stopped at the Edgewater Hotel (one of the older hotels there) for lunch, then checked out the river briefly, and then drove into town for a quick look. Had an excellent buffet at the Edgewater (FAR better, I'm afraid, than anything I had in Mesquite.) It was just a buffet (for $8.00,) but it seemed like they took each dish to a higher level than normal - and it was very good. It was much on par with a very good Vegas buffet - but at least half the price. I then looked at the river for a little while, and then briefly drove into town. I will need to make another - more extensive - trip in September, to make sure it's what I want; but from what I've seen, I like it. Laughlin WILL be DAMNED hot during the three main summer months - but for the rest of the year I think it would be pleasant. I love the idea of the nice casinos there (I'm not a big gambler, but love the idea of shows and good restaurants to go to,) plus the fun of having the Colorado run virtually through the middle of town! I can see myself buying a good used Jet Ski and buzzing up and down the Colorado at 50-60mph (as I saw others doing.) Also, it's only 1.5 hours to Vegas, about 4 hours to my friends in Phoenix, and about 5 hours to my mother and brother - so it would be a very easy drive to all those places. So I haven't decided 100% yet, and I still have some research to do, but right now it's looking like Laughlin for me in about five months. I will make another trip to Mesquite, Laughlin (and, of course, Vegas) in September to make a final decision, but right now it looks like Laughlin. So that's how it went. Hope Mesquite hasn't blown away since I left 10 days ago! Rich ![]() |

Sorry to be so late to this thread. I've lived in Nevada for 30 years. Bought a place in Mesquite 2 years ago. Vegas got too big. No one has mentioned the golf. You buy a one year pass for $100 (which includes one free round any time of year and a free round in July or August at each of 4 courses. Pass gives you local rate green fees which run between $45 and $60 depending on the course. Cart included -- no walking here. There are five 18hole layouts that belong to the Mesquite golf pass. You get it at any of the courses. Runs on a calendar year, so you may wish to wait til January to sign up. Wolf Creek is the fancy course that does not belong to the golf pass.
I would rank Mesquite higher than other places you are considering -- Vegas #2, Pahrump and Laughlin #'s 50 or lower. You can play golf year around, but get out REALLY early in July and August. |
