jack,

Thanks for that great info! I do appreciate it!

Yes, I must say I'm now leaning towards Laughlin.

It's just that I had such very poor meals in Mesquite - even in supposedly good places; and a very bad experience in general (it having a major sandstorm at the time definitely didn't help its cause along either ) - whereas the one meal I had in Laughlin was excellent for what it was, and I liked the town for what I saw of it in the brief time I was there.

I also thought the casinos in Mesquite were pretty cheesy except for the Casa Blanca - but even it paled in comparison to many of those in Laughlin - which reminded me of a mini-Vegas.

Laughlin also has the river (I want to buy a good used Jet Ski!!!!) - and it too has golf courses, though I can't get too much info on them.

I've also been checking the heat between the two towns on a daily basis for the past few weeks - and although Laughlin seems to be 4-5 degrees hotter on average, Mesquite is not that much better - and on some days is worse!

So I'm still weighing the pluses and minuses between the two of them - and your info is a definite plus for Mesquite - but I still think Laughlin may be the better way to go for me.

One thing that bothers me about Laughlin (besides the summer heat) is that some report a lot of crime across the river in Bullhead City - but I've also had someone tell me that Laughlin has a better police force and they keep it under control on the Laughlin side.

So I don't know for sure now which way I'm going, and am still trying to decide which would be better.

But I do very much appreciate your info, and would appreciate any other info on either town that anyone might provide that might help me in making up my mind.

So thank you again - and thank you 'rocco for all your help and info.

Sincerely,

Rich

Question Moving with a Teenager

Where to the kids go to college once they graduate? The community college in Mesquite is more enrichment oriented than degree oriented. It seems staying at home and commuting to school is really not an option. What are the college choices for teens living in Mesquite? Have researched VVHS info online, but looking for practical advice! Appreciate input!

Arrow Critter info

What kind of "bugs" can I expect to deal with in Mesquite? Scorpions, termites, black widows, tarantulas?

Looking for practical advice since we are considering relocating here.

Question Erosion

I love that the homes on the northern side of Mesquite are built in hilly/tiered streets. Does anyone know if there is a problem with erosion of those hills or mudslides??

Default Mesquite, NV

My wife and I are looking for some opinions and insight on Mesquite. Being from CT we want to get away from the cold and bake a little. We visited about 3 months ago to look at the new Dell Webb project. We loved Mesquite but weren't to impressed withwhat DW was offering for the price. We looked at some of the other developments and saw a wide range of quality. We really liked one development (Highland Vistas) and thought their quality of workmanship. One thing stood out though. It seemed like there was a glut of empty houses for sale with no buyers on the horizon. I had the feeling that prices would come down soon. Another concern of ours was the availability of water. One Realtor poopooed our concern by saying Mesquite had its own aquifer and had plenty of water. We would love to retire in Mesquite so if you any info or advice you could offer it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks humboldtrat. I'll merge it into the existing one.

Thumper, I'll make some general responses once I get it merged and will then contact you by PM.

Thanks.

Dixie State in St. George is 35-40 minutes away.

UNLV in Las Vegas is a hair over an hour away.

I’ve only come in contact with scorpions and black widows. I think I remember a thread discussing insects and pests in the Las Vegas forum that I’ll try to dig up for you.

Nope, I don’t think you have to worry about erosion or mudslides. I’ve seen very little mud, if any, over on the north side. I live there.

Yes, just like all over the general southern Utah/southern Nevada and Las Vegas area, Mesquite is also in a bit of a slump. Lots of empty new houses but still lots of houses still being built. It’s definitely a buyer’s market so if you see something you really like, don’t hesitate in making an offer and negotiating. You might be surprised at what they accept.

That Dell Webb section is going to be huge. And if you looked around, you’ll see other residential developments like it only smaller being built. Tortoise, as usual, has provided some good information and he’s also given some links on it earlier on this thread. We can talk about specific builders, etc. in a private DM.

You probably also noticed that there’s also a lot of business development going on too. I think everybody is expecting Mesquite to experience enormous growth in the next decade and beyond. There’s talks going on as we speak of developing Lincoln county where it abuts the Mesquite city limits/Clark county line. But yes, right now, everything is just simmering waiting for the next round of explosive growth. It may be a few years but I really believe it’s inevitable.

The water situation is controversial. My realtor also expressed the same thing …that the town is located on one of the largest aquifers west of the Mississippi. *shrugs shoulders* But remember, we’re still in Clark county so it is easily conceivable to have the Las Vegas area hijack the supposed abundance of water that Mesquite is purported to have.

PM (or DM) me again if you have any other specific questions and I’ll try to either answer them here or if they’re not pertinent for the general forum.
