My wife is a cage supervisor (3 years) at our local herbst casino in missouri. We don't like it here and would like to move back west - we've lived in sandiego, sacramento (don't like those) and medford oregon.
Is she likely to get on at ione of the casinos there? We also would buy an RV to live in (at least for awhile) - are there reasonable rv parks there?
Thanks much. John Hansen majorhart@sbcglobal.net

Well, at least it's hot and it never rains, so that'll be a nice change.
Other than that, and I'm not meaning to insult any Pahrumpians (Pahrumpers?) by saying this, but I have NO CLUE why anyone would want to live in Pahrump besides maybe that their families live there and they have that kind of connection to the place.
I find it desperately ugly, a flat, dry, featureless place with a lot of dust and a few whorehouses for culture, but that's about it.
My disclaimer, and I definitely think there should be one, is that I have not actually lived in the city. I've passed through it and visited friends there, but of course this is not like living there. Others may have different opinions.

Hey Charlie I would point out your vivid description covers about 80% of the Las Vegas Valley.
If you can put up with a little rural and a little redneck it is a reasonably nice place. I have been on some spreads there that are right up with the best of the "western ranch" places of Las Vegas.
They will also let you put a double wide on your lot...but I am not sure that is all bad.

Pahrump Is Horrible
I lived in Pahrump from 1998 to 2003. I guess if you are from a congested area and like the idea of a rural lifestyle, Pahrump may seem appealing. However, here some cons I have experienced during my 5 years there:
*It's almost always windy. You can't work in your yard many days during the spring and summer. Wind storms damage your trees, flowers, and can blow away whole storage sheds. My new trees were sandblasted once and all $2000 worth were ruined. Fruit trees cannot bear fruit because all of the flowers blow off before forming into fruit. Wind speed averages around 20mph and have reached 100mph at times. Dust devils are abundant and can toss 50lb. bags of soil around like feathers. I've had it happen!
*It is extremely dusty. You will find that you have to vacuum and dust daily to keep the fine, dirt-dust at bay. It does not matter how air tight your house is - the dirt-dust gets in.
*The town is divided and people can be very hateful. I have never seen so many hateful people in one place until I moved to Pahrump.
*Pahrump used to be a Witness Protection Program dumping ground. Lots of shady characters there.
*People steal from neighbors like crazy. My town motto is, "Pahrump - if you don't have it, just take it from someone that does". I remember a vacant lot near my house that had a nice, new chain link fence surrounding the property. One day, one side of the fence disappeared. Another day, another side disappeared. After several days, the whole darn fence was gone. Christmas decorations are stolen out of your yard. Once family made their own decorations and some jerk backed his pickup truck into their yard and stole the whole lot. And this family had just lost their daughter and put those decorations up in her memory. Shameful.
I could go on but I think I'll stop here.

Pahrump is terrible
What a negative crappy reply. I have only been here since Sept. but I found no truth in his report. I find the people are very friendly, crime is less than in many towns & is of a petty nature, wind does blow but not like he describes & not all the time. I do not dust every day, the dust was worse when I lived in AZ than here. There is lots to do here, it is a very veteran friendly town, weather is generally good year round & there is something here for everyone, & there appears to be a good community spirit.
With all the new business growth including Home Depot, do you think they would come here if it were as he described? I doubt he would be happy anywhere.

It can be windy everywhere.. I'm up in Elko, and it can howl up here. I don't remember Pahrump being notably windier. As for the people, I met some super nice people when I lived there, made a couple of friendships that have lasted, even though I have long since moved. I had bushes and roses and goodies in the yard, even a very unique mailbox.. nothing got stolen. Just my own experience with that area. I lived there about 2.5 years.

Hmm let me look at my weather monitor.. Wind: 2 MPH right now in Pahrump.. always windy? Please.. lol
Wow, what "Pahrump" did you live in? I have lived here for a good 8 years now and NOTHING of what you said makes any sense or is true even in the slightest.
To me it seems as if there is a serious dis-info campaign on the web to discredit Pahrump. I have seen these malcontents all over the net using similar user-names to bash Pahrump.
Folks, if you want to move here do not let these types dissuade you from moving here.. Most of them are the types that got run out of town a few years ago when they tried to turn part of Pahrump in a "city" that was nothing more than a homeowners association with draconian rules and one of them as the "boss".
