Because it gets warm, it gets algae, stinking stuff, but then so does Lake Mead.

In 2005 the depth was 86 feet, and it is probably shallower than that today.

It is a great lake for sailing, and for fishing, at least until it turns into a playa.

The Ammo dump is off the south shore, the east shore is unspoiled, but, many tell tales of super natural happenings on the east shore.

However, it does not have the water babies which haunt Pyramid Lake, which is a plus.

On the west is Mt Grant, the military keeps that as a private hunting ground for the brass, or used to.

The major sport in Hawthorne is drinking. The minor sports in Hawthorne are, drinking. The best restaurant in Hawthorne is McDonalds.

If you are into exploring the desert, like jeeps, like dirt bikes, enjoy sitting in boats and drinking while hiding from the wind, it is a great place
actually they have found people that have drown in pyramid lake that have ended up in walker lake so there is some kind of underground tunnel. and there are water babies in soda lake -so they say

Bearing in mind that Pyramid is quite a bit higher up than Walker, and they have not found the bottm of the former in spots, the tunnel thing is a myth, the two lakes were connected at one time, they are the remnants of the inland sea called Old Lake Lahanton, that once filled the Great Basin. Nether lake has any natural shade, and they are alkaline. Very close to sea water, in fact. Mineral County sucks. I can't put it any more delicatly than that. The place is like something out of a bad B movie, and is what stereotypes of Nevadans, as backwards trailer trash, (one trip to Mina, Luning or Gabbs and you will know what I mean) are made out of..

Ocean water salinity 35 parts per thousand
Pyramid Lake 4.3 parts per thousand
Walker, around 8 depending on run off.

Both are a long way from seawater.

Mono for contrast has 90 parts per thousand, no fish can survive that.

The old story is of the underwater passage from Tahoe, drowned bodies from Tahoe surfacing in Pyramid 3 days later.

Another story is of the man who found a log plugging a hole at the bottom of Tahoe, he removed the log, the mines in Virginia City flooded, the price of the stock went down, he bought tons of stock and put the log back, the mines drained, and he made money.

I was not making a ..scientific..comparison to sea water. Merely that Walker and Pyramid are not fresh water lakes, and they are closer to sea water, in terms of the waters usefulness, than they are fresh water. Walker and Pyramid are alkaline, not saline, if you want to get that technical anyway.

Hawthorne won't give you much to do. Just a tiny little place. It's OK if you want the isolation. I saw clams right by the shore. Fish and algae too.

Well the fish are all but gone.. The good ones anyway.. Wildlife is disappearing around the lake too as it is too alkaline to drink. We actually tasted it while there.. Very salty! I don't see how anything could live in that lake. There used to be big fishing tournaments there, alas, no more! So much water is being taken from the Walker River for ag use, it is dwindling fast. I feel sorry for all the people who actually bought property there thinking they were getting Lake Front Property! Their children will inherit a mud hole. Sad, because it is a prehistoric lake. It makes me mad that real estate people are not telling propective buyers that the lake is drying up. Instead they are touting "Great Fishing & Boating". But for how long??
