Tonopah vs. Pahrump
I live in Massachusetts, and someday I'd like to move to Nevada, preferably Nye County (no, not for the prostitution; when I tell people I want to move to that area, they always make a comment about this). I've been looking at either Pahrump, or Tonopah. While many badmouth both areas, could anyone inform me about them and which one would be better? Because many say that both of these places are horrible, I don't know which one would be better. Any help would be appreciated.

Only YOU can determine that, based on your own personal preference criteria . . you know, "boots on the ground" visitations.

You're really not leading on as to why you prefer Nye County. Can you be more specific? It's difficult to compare Tonopah and Parhump as their population is not that similar. Although the county seat, Tonopah is quite small and isolated in comparison.

I like the terrain of the area and the fact that while it is fairly close to Las Vegas, it isn't too close to it. I know the two towns are different population-wise and in other ways; that's why I was wondering what people's opinions on the two towns were.

The positive of Parhump is much less isolated than Tonopah. You could be in Vegas quickly to get things if needed. Plus of Tonopah is you might get to see some very interesting things in the night sky. I have not been to Tonopah so no first hand knowledge.

Coming from Mass, you may find the immense distances intimidating. Tonopah is epitomizes the small town insularity of small town Nevada. A whole lot of drinking and not much else, there isn't much economy.
Pahrump is comparatively bustling, and has a downtown cathouse (important for some)
Either place, you have to be pretty comfortable with yourself, as you will spend a lot of time with just yourself, probably.

Tonopah is too isolated and there is nothing to do there. Pahrump is close to Las Vegas and all the things it has to offer.
Have you thought about northern Nevada - places such as Reno, Carson City or towns within a 100 miles or so?

Thanks for helping me out, everyone. Clarks, while some may find the immense space and size of that area menacing, I'd welcome it. Massachusetts is far too cramped and everyone is too close to each other. I'd enjoy some fresh air and some breathing room.

Now, my recommendation for Nevada for a young man is Elko, These mountains rise right east of town, and as beautiful as they are, they aren't the best range in Northeast Nevada.
