I'm a radio broadcaster who is interested in the business and try and learn all I can. I've done a little research on the stations in Ely and WInnemucca, but can't find much.

With regards to Ely, I saw a posting somewhere that both the husband AND wife that owned KDSS 92.7 in Ely died. Is that true? It said they died at seperate times about a year apart. I saw another post somewhere that suggests only the husband has passed on.

What is KDSS' format?

As for Winnemucca, what is the format of KWNA-FM at 92.7 and KWNA-AM at 1400?

Neither KDSS or KWNA have a website, so it makes it hard to dig up information. KWNA USED to have one under the previous owners, but don't anymore.

You can email me privately if you wish, walkerbroadcasting@gmail.com

Yeah, the owner in Ely died a couple of months back. I belive you are correct about her husband's date of passing as well. Here's her obituary:

The Ely Times - elynews.com :: Obituaries: Samantha Jean Coates (http://elynews.com/articles/2009/09/10/obituaries/obit03.txt - broken link) ( I think they have the power output incorrect. I thought the max power was 50k watts, and that was allways on AM. They do have a translator in Eureka and maybe they are counting the power output there as well).

the Hotel Nevada website may have some information on KDSS as they broadcast out of there. I believe it's hotelnevada.com, but unfortunatly, Im at work and its blocked here. KDSS is country music, all from an outside source (some national syndication?). News on the hour and a few daily country living/wildlife shows. The programing is very sloppy, with commercials and news starting and ending in the middle of songs. I wont listen to is personally, since I dont really like country but the just plain lazy programming just makes for horrible listening.

Uli2000,

Tgank you for the post and the information. I went looking for Samantha's obituary and couldn't find it.

If sounds like there is no one "minding the shop" over there, otherwise the sloppiness you describe wouldn't be going on. I have a feeling KDSS is barely hanging on.

If you can find out any more information for me, and would care to email me privately, I'd appreciate it.... Id like t know whats going on there and what the plans are for the station and who's in charge there.

I have no alterior motives, I am just a lover/supporter/someone who appreciates small town radio.

There is a vacant allotment for a Full Class C FM license in Ely at 99.1 FM with 100,000 Watts at 1968 feet (The max for FM in the USA is 100KW at 2000 ft or the equivalent thereof).

You can't just apply for a broadcast license at anytime, you have to wait till the FCC tells you there is a window they're opening up. With commercial licenses, you are forced to bid $$ wise and may not be the only one bidding. FM licenses in the commercial band start out with a MINIUMUM bid of $2500, usually mroe, and this one would probably start at at least $5000 or more.

With non commercial licenses, you can apply for any frequency that fits, and dont have to bid on it or anything.

As far as I can tell, Channel 256C (99.1) in Ely was never put up for auction or no ones ever bid on it.

I'm really not interested in that, I don't actually drive much - only when I'm going up into the mountains or driving out of town - I can walk to work and do a lot of my shopping/leisure downtown, which I also walk to. Plus I don't want to pay another subscription charge

Anyway, I'm just expressing my interest in another radio station in Ely, it doesn't affect me much one way or another
