Default Hiking/Camping/Backpacking for FREE

Can anyone here give me some links or recommend some places where I can hike/backpack and camp for free? Everywhere I look it seems like I have to camp in a predesignated area and pay money for a campsite? Just to set up a tent?

I moved here from NY recently and I am a little confused. Back home it was not like this. There were lots of parks and wilderness areas where you could camp wherever you want without having to notify anyone. You could set up your tent anywhere and it was not a problem.

Basically just looking for places where we can park our car and just set off on our own for a few days without having to have a reservation to camp or pay money.

Would like to know about the closest places where this is possible. Anywhere from here in NV to Utah, Arizona, and California would be great.

Thank you.

Oh I should add we don't mind places where you have to register first, as long as you don't have to pay, and as long as they don't force you to stay on one of their campgrounds.

HIKING THE RUBY MOUNTAINS

East of Elko. I have parked at the end of the road in Lamoille Canyon and have walked off for a couple days into the mountains. It's all free and there are not too many restrictions.

That picture of Liberty Lake is gorgeous. My wife and I are moving to Elko in about a month. Just in time to take in some great hiking, huh?

By all means, hike in the Ruby Mtns after you get into Elko. It's beautiful area.

When you get to Elko, be sure to also check out Ruby Lake (also known as Ruby Marsh) on the east side of the Ruby Mountains. The area is a marsh/wetlands with lots of bird life, duck hunting, hiking, camping and fishing - a very pretty area

Check out the BLM and USFS websites for your area. Will have info on avalible camping. I know around Ely, we have developed campgrounds on Mt. Ward and several in the Schelles that are free, and some that are paid like at Cave Lake and GBNP.
