Front wheel drive and 4 snow tires, along with some patience will be all you need IMO.

VW's aren't nearly as bad as they used to be and the MkV (new) GTI is one of the bet yet. Also remember the disparity between a "reliable" car and an "unreliable" car si now insanely close. You can buy almost any new car nowadays and get 100k relatively trouble free miles out of it.

Now VW Dealers and Service on the other hand are ranked among the lowest in the industry.

JD Power is a customer satisfaction survey. Not a accurate reading on the reliability of a car in the long run.

You can't buy a bad car these days. Some are prone to problems that are inherant to the individual manufacturers (i.e. VW's elec. gremlins) and they all have them (I should know-I sell autoparts!), but for the most part, try and find a vehicle that will depreciate slower than some others. Stay away from GMs...they depreciate the fastest. Honda's, Toyota's, Subaru's, are the best buys for lower depreciation.
But, it's all in what makes you happy. Buy whatever you want. It's your butt that's going to be sitting in it! Do what you want!
