Went for a visit
I've been interested in moving to New Hampshire for quite awhile. While living in Richmond, Virginia I knew several former residents and it was their conversations that piqued my interest (and once prior I made a thread here regarding my interest). So, I decided to take a week and scout out the area that grabbed me the most: The Lakes. I took a week with my girlfriend and another friend and got ourselves a place at an inn in Moultonborough, and over the next week saw as much of the area as we could, from Moultonborough to Wolfeboro to Tilton, and many points in-between.
I have to say that I thought it was simply gorgeous, and I fell in love with it very quickly. I was wondering at first if I would, because perhaps it might fail to live up to my expectations. That did not prove to be so. There is little unpleasant to say about any of it. The people were so friendly and courteous, holding doors for us, letting us merge in traffic or take a turn into a busy street and very free with advice when we mentioned that we wanted to move here. Lots of research has led me to conclude that living here would be well within my means, and there's certainly no shortage of things to do in the warmer months anyway. It truly hurt to have to leave to go back to smelly old Virginia, knowing I have to live here another ten months.
I'm excited to one day be able to call New Hampshire home. Lovely state you guys have going on up there.

It certainly is a lovely state - but, so is Virginia! I'd suggest you spend some time in that area of NH during the winter and see how you like it before you make a permanent move.

Are winters worse in NH than MA?

The winters are one of the attracting forces for me. My time living in northeast PA helped me acquire my love for winter weather. I'll be going back before Christmas to get a taste of the colder months, but it's really just verification: I fell in love already and the war is pretty much over.
And yeah, Virginia is lovely too, but I've been here for twenty years, and well, the thrill just isn't here anymore. It's time to move along.

rtangs: This post is a bit stale, but I've just seen a very interesting segment on Chronical (TV5 Boston) about a religious order, Saint Benedict Center...SBC for short, in Richmond that has stired up a hornet's nest in this small hamlet. If you, or anyone, is considering a move to this community, it is undoubtedly essential you know what all the uproar is about. I urge you to do a Google on "SBC, Richmond, NH." You may be shocked by what is gripping these NH folks. One side see no problem, but others are very uneasy.

I just read a few articles on the cult-sbc. Scary stuff. I have to agree with the towns people, anyone rooted in that much hatred is never a good idea. I would be uneasy near that madness.

lived in NH my whole life, but I've never been to Richmond. not really sure where it is but I suspect it is in the lower left corner of the state.
glad you had a good visit this summer. Do you ski? there are some awesome ski areas here.
