I have a week off in September. Last year we did Santa's Village and hiking (Lonesome Lake). This year I was thinking about Squam Lake Science Center. And then I figure we could do some hiking as well. What else is in the area? And any dining/lodging recommendations? We have 2 boys that will be 1.5 and 3 when we go.

A couple miles further east on Route 113 past the Science Center is the trailhead for Rattlesnake Mtn., which is a quick and easy hike that rewards you with stunning views of the Lakes Region.

You could also consider visiting nearby Meredith and Wears Beach; maybe the kids would enjoy the Winnepesaukee Scenic Railroad that runs between Meredith and Lakeport. There's also the Mt. Washington boat cruise between Weirs Beach and Alton Bay and back again, although you could also do a guided cruise on Squam Lake via the Science Center.

I've always heard good things about both the Squam Lake Inn and the Inn on Golden Pond in Holderness. But there are a lot of lodging options in the area. I would also recommend walking around Center Sandwich village, which is really nice. Perhaps a trip to the Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough would be in order as well.

That is a very beautiful part of New Hampshire. Search on NM Lakes Region for more information that you could ever want. The Science Center is fascinating. Enjoy.

Next town up Ashland has the first Common Man, a wicked cool place to eat with creative chefs. The up stairs bar is just a laid back place to be. It's all nooks and crannies if you like or more open, with odd assorted thyings from yesteryear as tables. One I like is a old forge bellows top as one table and the bottom as another.

I think in Fall thru Winter they have a beater old wood stove that leaks a little smoke, which is just about right, but it seems to go away in Spring and Summer for one more table place.
