I'm looking at a 1978 motorcycle project and the seller claims there is no title issued on anything over 15 yrs in NH. Is this true? He says he can give me a bill of sale and I can register the bike that way.

The reason I question the guy is obvious..... I don't want to buy a bike I can't register and put plates on, but he also says he lost the key and had to "hotwire it.... fun bike to beat around with".

Thanks.

I beleive all you need is the bill of sale. I bought a couple 60's harleys and registered them with just a bill of sale.

It's true - a bill of sale is all you need - go to your TOWN clerk and register it, then to the STATE DMV to get the plates.

I think a Bill of Sale is all that is required but before believing us call your town clerk and ask.

You need the bill of sale and also a form from the police. They have to see the bike and verify the VIN. With those two pieces of paper you can go to the NH DMV and register it in your name.

As long as I'm at it here is the form:

I also found this from a NH town.
Most Commonly Asked Questions | Town of Boscawen, NH

I'm not sure if the procedure is the same in all towns, they say the cops cahrge $10 to come to your home; you can also get the VIN verified at an inspection station.

Yes. This is something relatively new. The local police have to verify the VIN. You can drive it down to station or in my town they will come to you. No charge for this in my town. But time will tell when fees will be applied for this.
