What's WRONG with people!? The neighborhood is fighting this one like crazy.
I think as a town, Merrimack should VOTE out all the members of the Planning Board and Zoning Board who are making such awful decisions.

Now I must say that you're doing the right thing. Put out flyers all over town as well, demanding that the city government come out about their hidden agendas. I suggest the local television stations be called, once you have enough people rounded up in your area to give a good turn out. Picket on city hall.... Down with big business, up with local business! Save our heritage, don't let Wally take it away! I am sure you get the idea. If I were there in New Hampshire already, I'd be right there with you and everyone else picketing.

I understand how you think Walmart is the icon of putting local business out of business, but its just an icon. In 20 years it will be another company.
The world is changing, with or without walmart. You can buy that china made handwoven basket locally for $10 or buy it at walmart for $2. Its the same exact basket, and its made in china. Walmart just sells it for less.

NO-It is not the same basket!!!! Not even close. Everynight on the news we are seeing the dangers of that. Far beyond running mom and pop companies out of business, our health is at jeopardy. Practically every night there is some recall on food, children's toys , tooth paste etc. It is horrible that the greed in this country has led to the outsourcing of everything! What do we make anymore? We used to make almost everything, people had higher wages, etc. I don't get that enough people are not outraged that Communist China makes practically everything now. They hate us. I don't trust them. How do we not know that this tainted food and other products aren't done on purpose? China would love nothing better than to cripple us. They came out a few weeks ago and said that they could destroy our stock market if they wanted to-they practically warned us.
I know Walmart is not the only one who sells Chinese goods. However they are the biggest offender to buy the cheapest stuff. Once NAFTA and GATT were implemented, Walmart took the ball and ran and it is nothing but a detriment to our safety.

Just out of curiosity.....I though the "live free & die attitude" also encompased property rights (ie property owners have a right to do what they want with their property = less zoning/permitting). In Vermont we have strict development regulations which is why you don't see the rampant development like you see in So. NH and we get labled as "communists" LOL.
In this thread I see that my notion is wrong? Not trying to stir up a hornets nest here....just genuinely curious.

Live Free or Die is about personal responsibility. It is about taking action that may or may not harm you, but does not others and infringe on their rights. I think that when it comes to a town, they have a right to fight and keep their town's character. What about town's rights? If a town wants to keep its character and the residents of that town don't want say a Walmart, they have a right to say no. The problem is, even though we are supposed to live in a democracy, judges come in and rule that they must allow these businesses to build however they want.
I don't believe that Vt is labeled "communist" as you put it because of zoning. It has more to do with things like Burlington judges going easy on sex offenders, they mayor of Burlington declaring Burlington a sanctuary city and welcoming law breakers and offering to protect them. There are other thinngs that I cannot think of right now.

One example: Just recently, I visited a small mom and pop store that sold folk art style stuff. It was a small house converted into a store. They had all kinds of stuff that look like they were made in new england, maybe even NH. One was a nice little pot holder hand stitched with a small new england house on the front. I turn it over "Made in China" LOL, you cant get away from it. Even if you think its made in the usa, its proubably not. This is 2007, get used to it.
Before you say mom and pop stores dont sell made in china stuff, you should start looking at labels.
Another good example is Apple Juice. Have a can of frozen apple juice? Take a look at the label, i bet its made in china. Doesnt matter what the brand.
That said.... I agree its wrong, I'm very sorry we dont make more stuff in the USA, I'm ashamed we ship so much from poor countries instead of less imports and jobs to americans. Its too bad, but its the world we live in.

Sorry- I read your post wrong
I took it as you were saying there was no difference between China made and American made. I need to pay more attention before I post-sorry again!
I agree that "China made" is everywhere today and it is very sad. However once and a while you can run across a few mom and pop's that actually make their products in America

I would rather pay $10 which goes to the local guy, than give even 2 CENTS to WALMART. It's not an Icon, it's an EYE SORE. I hate their big box buildings and don't want to see their ilk in my presence.
Walmart supports hiring illegal aliens, helps run local businesses under, and puts up big UGLY buildings.
