It's a socioeconomic thing. I have never seen it flown by anyone who has any semblance of education or is middle-class or higher.
That's because those people come from the North so they don't fly the Confederate flag!

Funny, but wrong.

Most southerners wouldn't dream of hoisting one up the flagpole, unless they are in that certain socioeconomic group.

Well, the solution I came up with for myself was relatively straight forward: I "downsized" my material possessions to allow me and my family to comfortably live in less square footage. Obviously, some people will find this more difficult than others, but........

I used to live in a 3500 square foot house with a bunch of things I rarely used. Over the course of 3 months, I eliminated from my life that which was just taking up space. Consequently, my family and I are now living very comfortably in a 725 square foot house in one of the nicest areas in New England and I pay only $375 annually for heat. And now, since my housing, property taxes, and utility costs are so low, and I don't have to work 75 hour weeks anymore (just to pay to store stuff), I have the time to actually enjoy life with my family. Downsizing was probably the smartest thing I've ever done......... and now I can actually find what I am looking for around the house. And most importantly of all, my young daughter is very happy that she has a dad who has time to go bicycling riding and build snowmen with her.

Moral of the story (at least for me): Don't let "stuff" stand in the way of your New England dream and spending time with your loved ones.

And your daughter will always remember making snowmen and bike riding with dad versus dad running day and night, making money to buy things...but you know that

And I'm curious if this is the next backlash of the baby boomers: we don't need "things" to be happy, we just want to experience life without being encumbered with rooms of aquired dust collectors? I'm on my way there too and once the SOLD sign goes up, I'm on the road.....trying to talk hubbie into a nomadic retirement with occassional drop-ins on the kids...how's that for radical !!!!!!

And as for NE, I could zigzag through those country roads until I'm 105 and never see the same beauty twice....

Hello All: I'm doing the FL to NE move soon too. We have been looking in NH also. We spent 2 summers in Wolfeboro. Too small for us. We are looking for something just outside of a medium size city.
How did your move go? Any words of wisdom for the rest of us? We will only be 6 months in NH and none of the really cold months so the weather is not going to be an issue.
Many thanks,
Lindylou

medium sized compared to what? medium for NH?? you might try something outside Concord. If you want something outside of a 'medium sized city' that's medium to the rest of the country, you'd want to be outside Manchester or Nashua.

Hi, autumnlove07 and all: This is my first post in any NH thread. I moved to NH from NC a year ago after living in the south for nearly 30 years. I am from NY originally and I couldn't wait to get back to "snow country!" Love that cooler weather and snow, and leaves, and and and!! Not once have I wished I had not made the move even though I left family behind in the south.
Sorry I don't have any advice that has not already been given, just wanted to give you a big thumbs up and Good Luck!!

They fly a HUGE one here on one of the main drags downtown. By huge I mean the size of a building huge...I kinda cringe whenever I have to drive by it. I mean I get its a heritage and pride thing and all that but its not like it represents the best thing in the world imo. When I was in culinary school we had a girl throw a HUGE fit because she wore a shirt with the flag under her uniform and you can't do that according to dress code and my god was there a scene about how she should be able to represent her familys pride and past and all I could think was theres a time and place for that. I mean just caus someone was German and his grandfather was a nazi doesn't mean you can wear a swastica to school to "represent your family's pride and past" .. right?

There are some things that I soooooo miss from the North that don't exist down here and some are incredibly hard to find. New England Hot Dog Rolls! I asked about the at the grocery store....What a mistake! I was told they don't exist. Ummm really? I ate from for over 35 years! Must have been my imagination. How can a place exist without Freihofer's? And pretzels....omg they suck here along with pizza and bagels.

Every single lake in SC is FAKE! How can a place not have a real lake? That's just craziness. I sooooo miss water and mountains. I never realized how important they are in life and I took that for granted.

There's the whole apple picking, pumpkin picking, visiting farms, county fairs, craft fairs, fall festivals, winter festivals, leaf peeping, raking leaves, skiing, snow mobiling, sitting in front of a fire sipping hot chocolate or wine - wine you picked up that day at a local vineyard, backyard bonfires, snowball fights, pizza, bagels, New England Style Hot Dog Rolls (LOL), chicken BBQ places, way better food where everything isn't a buffet or terrible bbq, ok I'll stop now.....
I know I am posting on an old thread.. hope some of the original posters will read this and respond.

ss20ts- after reading your post esp. the last paragraph.. halfway through i told myself I HAVEEEE TO STOP READING. (its crazy.. in a good way)

I too love snow and I live near Philly. Considering moving to Dallas area.. Plano or Frisco.. for good schools and reasonable cost of living. Especially the home you can get for your money is amazing. It will cost over 2 million in New England or NorthEast in general and mid-atlantic. Anyway long story short, I love snow, trees, hills, rivers, lakes, and most importantly beaches. But the place where I live do NOT have good public schools.. for 2 kids the private schools around here cost 20k/year. I live near in PA/DE border, in DE.

I have been thinking to move to southern New Hampshire near Boston. Right now I am contemplating between Boston Metro vs Dallas metro. My heart is here.. but the kind of house I want with the money I have and good schools for kids for the next 10 years make me think about Dallas area. Also we are a multi-cultural couple and liberal minded. I know Dallas area and Texas is NOT the real "south" with confederate ideals, but still it is not Yankee.. if you know what I mean. I lived in Dallas area few months and to be fair I have to admit it is not bad at all. People are nice and friendly. But I never lived in summer there..

Well..

I'm one of those in the south that is desperate to get out. The south has become a really bad place to call home for anyone who is progressive, pro-union, has anything above a high school diploma/GED (there are exceptions, of course, for some pros and career fields). Some people love it here. I moved here a few years ago because of family issues. That move killed my career. When I moved to the south, I took a 3/4 cut in pay and lost the upward climb in my career.

The thinking in the south is backwards, dominated by those who like the status quo. There are no unions here to protect workers, no real desire to help people, no one want to effect change for the better. I'm tired of seeing overgrown trailer parks sporting confederate flags, and toothless rednecks with a mouth full of tobacco. Tired of seeing the asinine behaviors of misfit teens whose parents have no future and neither do they. Tired of being around people who cannot hold a conversation beyond what frozen dinner they are going to nuke in the microwave, and "Hey, how 'bout them Cowboys!" Really? Tired of hearing about how anyone who isn't a Republican is a socialist. I tell people I'm in IT and I might as well have said I'm an astronaut. Man, this place is really getting to me. People who have made the move or are making it are blessed. Lord willing I'm on my way north as well.
