Default Best towns in Monadnock area?

My plan is to buy/build a retirement home in the Monadnock region in the next year. I want some privacy and land to grow my own food, but want to be near a nice town. Schools are not an issue, but I would like to be involved in town government. What are your picks for the best towns in this region? I want to stay within a 90 minute drive of Boston for medical reasons but plan to buy a hybrid car so I keep my carbon footprint low.

Almost any one of the places in this region are very neat places to live. Generally the further from Peterborough and Hillsdale the lower the prices tend to be.
