Hello!

We may be moving to the Newton area of New Hampshire and I am looking for advice as to which communities have good school districts. I have heard that SAU 16 is highly desirable, but how about other surrounding towns that have good schools as well. The type where your child will be served well and do just fine and it doesn't have to be the absolutely highest ranking, etc. As an example, for anyone familiar with MA schools, we are content with the Old Rochester Regional school district where we are now, in south coast MA, and don't have to have a Concord Carlisle, a Dover Sherborn type system.

Which of those towns also have a nice sense of "place", nice downtowns, etc?

We have two children, a kindergartner and a 2 year old.

Thank you so much!!

There are quite a few towns in that part of the state with very strong school systems (Hampstead, Brentwood?), but the town with by far the most sense of "place" and community with an active downtown is Exeter. Most of the other towns have more of an exurban feel. To be fair, I don't have any personal experience with these school systems, but I've never heard anything bad about Exeter schools.

Newton is part of the Sanborn district, and is considered 'ok' by the locals. Not outstanding, not terrible... More highly regarded school districts in the area are in Hampstead (which tuitions to Pinkerton Academy for HS) and the other Timberlane towns of Plaistow and Atkinson (Timberlane HS).

Exeter (Sau 16) is very highly rated and consists of several southern NH towns. Be aware though, that most of these are 'bedroom communities' and will offer little in the way of a downtown or 'sense of place' that you might be looking for. Exeter has a charming little downtown area, very walkable with restaurants, independent shoppes & services. For the groceries, etc. there are choices along the Rte 108 area near Rte 101 (east of town center). Exeter to Newton is 20-25 minutes travel time along the back roads.
