Default Do I want To Live In Canaan?

loc: River Road at Canaan Street Canaan NH US - Google Maps

Found this 5 acre parcel for 65k

Sounds a lot better than the 300k

Seller says it is 10 mins to Hanover, Lyme

Are public schools available? I understand that Cardigan School is nearby. But I don't think I want to send my kids to a private school like that.

I figured that is where you found the info. The local newspaper, The Valley News, actually ran an article recently that debunked most of Money Magazine's claims about diversity, etc. Sure there are minority undergrads that live on campus, but in the Town of Hanover itself you will probably not find the diversity you are seeking. That is not to say that people are racist in Hanover, just that if you go to any of the local restaurants for example you are not likely to see many minorities if you count the people over 22 years old.

Anyway, good luck with your decision. I would visit first before spending a lot of time dreaming about building a house there. It is certainly a nice town with a lot to offer, but it is not the utopia that Money Magazine made it out to be. Remember, they are trying to sell you a magazine. They will skew the data and use lots of superlatives because fantasies sell better.

Good luck.

Hanover is a great town. You would do fine there. Also look up Yankee Barn Homes in Grantham

Default Is the weather uncomfortable?

84% humidity is what I'm seeing. What do people do to stave this off? How cold are the winters? Are mosquitoes very bad this time of year?

Bob The Builder: Might help sway you to know Mark Steyn -- brilliant journalist, political commentator and author of America Alone -- has a home in Lyme. Undoubtedly he chose the location for many of the same criteria you have.

Beyond the CNNMoney.com article naming Hanover the second best place to live, it also classifies Hanover as the 8th best place to retire young. I guess that's me. I will explore other towns though. Thanks again for the comments.

I am trying to gather info as best I can By the way, 79% humidity?
My wife and kids are not white but I am not too concerned about this. We've had more problems in areas that are very "diverse" than in New England or the midwest. Not sure if this helps but there is an Asian supermarket in Lebanon. So there must be some South and East Asians around.

Kids being called names is a universal problem and not necessarily related to white kids exclusively. I was at the playground last weekend with my kid. He hooked up with another kid who was a bully and probably Arab (his mom wore a head covering). The bully was picking on a bunch of little girls and then kept calling some Hispanic kids "Illegals" (I doubt they were illegals--all spoke great English). I took my kid home because I didn't want him to mimic the bully's behavior.

Regarding humidity and having lived in the Washington DC area: central AC is nice when it's humid, and consider central AC plus a dehumidifier in the basement for summers. This is one problem with that NH/VT area--many homes don't have forced air heat which makes adding on central AC difficult (window units should be very easy in most houses and will be sufficient for a 1-2 week heat wave). Building your own home you can take care of that.

You sound like a nice guy. If you move to the area and I move to the area, I'll take you shooting.

Portie
