By state law , nh fish and game has to assist in the rescue of anyone in the woods . This costs thousands of dollars . Since F&G is self financed , all of their income comes from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, snowmobile and 4 wheeler and boat registrations. Yet 80% of the people they are rescuing are hikers who contribute nothing to F&G.

This sounds like a setup that woul;d fly great in Mass , but it shouldn't be that way here.

I agree. They are usually sheep who don't even attempt to get out of the woods knowing 911 will save them.

I think it wouldn't be too difficult to get a state rep to sponsor a bill to start charging for rescues.

Hmmm, methinks a letter or two is in order.

NH is one of eight states that will bill you to be rescued.

In 2009, an eagle scout was billed over $25K.

In 2008, lawmakers changed the standard from reckless to negligent in order to collect in more cases.

Unfortunately, as with many things in NH, there is no consistency in billing. It all depends on whether you are judged to be reckless or negligent.

Actually I believe there is an effort underway to make the billing more consistent; my wife was at a workshop and it was being discussed. Obviously, no matter what, with there being significant subjectivity even with defined criteria...there will be issues; but they are working to make it more consistent.

No rescuing hikers period is getting old. Unless the hiker got into trouble due to an unexpected medical issue.. screw em. they got into the mess let them get themselves out.

You make out like most of Fish and Game's revenue goes to rescuing Hikers... lets see if that's true:

2010 Sources of Revenue:

2010 Expenses:

SO... no more than 20% of expenses go to the entire category of "law enforcement, search and rescue, and ohrv". Even if we defy logic and assume that most of that is rescuing crunchy tree-huggers in Birkenstocks, it does not come close to the amount of money spent on fish & wildlife management, and waterway access and management - all areas that hunters and fishermen would expect their cash to go to.

So less then 20% is being stolen . What am I supposed to say " cool" ?What would hikers say if they had to pay a fee to build boat ramps?

also - of that $5M, only $440K was used in rescues - the other $4.5 M was law enforcement. The reality is closer to 1.5%, not 20%.

It's really a non-issue.

There are various sites in the White Mountains that charge fees to hike. All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land are required to display a Recreation Pass where signed. A $3 day Recreation pass available on-site, a $20 or a $25 household annual pass for those that use the Forest year-round, or a $5 pass which is good for 1 to 7 consecutive days.

The NH Division of Parks and Recreation own and maintain a good share of the boat ramps in NH, not F&G.

Waterboy needs to stop blubbering about a problem that does not exist.
