If no insurance is required, does that make it more expensive than in surrounding states?

2nd part: If you carry no insurance but then drive into surrounding states that require coverage are you breaking the law in those surrounding states by having no insurance?

First question: No, insurance is cheaper in NH than in MA...by a lot. Also, most people do carry insurance.

2nd question: you're not breaking the law if you drive into Massachusetts uninsured. Many MA residents buy additional coverage for issues with un (or under)-insured drivers.

If an uninsured driver is found at fault in an automobile accident, there would be no coverage for your vehicle, and medical insurance may or may not cover any medical treatment for you, depending on your policy. If you damage property or strike a pedestrian, you would be responsible for any and all damages, including medical claims. Many years ago, an uninsured motorist ran into my mother's house in Massachusetts, causing significant damage. Her homeowners insurance paid, then sued the operator to collect, and they attached wages for many years. Very few people drive uninsured--it's just not worth it.

If you have a car loan or lease the lender will require you to have comprehensive insurance.

Not sure about all states.

But some states when pulled over for minor traffic violation - officer asks for registration and insurance card.

Is NH the only state that does not require auto insurance?

I'm pretty sure you'd be driving illegally in Vermont without insurance. I know you are required to show proof of insurance if you get pulled over.

From the DMV:
New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Laws do not require you to carry Auto Insurance, but
you must be able to demonstrate that you are able to provide sufficient funds to
meet New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Requirements in the
event of an “at-fault” accident. If you are unable to meet these requirements your
driving privileges in New Hampshire may be suspended.

This means that if you do not have insurance and you are at-fault in an accident, then you need to prove that you have the assets to cover up to $50K in liability. If you can't - you will be suspended until the legal liability is settled. Your liability is not limited to $50K by this.

Driving without insurance is for fools.

I'm positive you are driving illegally if you cross the border to VT and don't have insurance. If you get pulled over and don't have an insurance card you are in deep trouble.

yes if you do not carry ins and cross a state line you are breaking the law.

Most people have ins , about 8% of nh drivers do not. NJ is a ins required state and about 8% drive without it.

If you are paying zero for insurance than obviously it would be cheaper.
Any damage from an accident that you caused you can be liable for. Many poor people don't work or work under the table and never pay off those liabilities. Some move to other states.
Most insurance is a scam. You pay in and rarely get any bennies back. If you do it may raise your rate.
That said there is always a chance you will cause an accident. It happens.
It all depends on how responsible a citizen you choose to be.
