Could it happen? NH does seem to be more independent-minded than the rest of the New England states - certainly more so than VT and MA. Given Romney's ties to the state, and that he is not seen as an extremist like Santorum or Gingrich, could he defeat Obama here?

Just curious to see what people on the ground in NH are saying - what is the general sentiment about the general election?

Yeah he has ties to the state all right - one of his companies closed down a plant and people lost their jobs. Pffft. I'm still seeing Huntsman signs in Claremont in people's lawns.

his ties to NH are largely pushed by the media. While he was governor in Mass from '03-'07, NH doesn't really care about Mass politicians. Sue, he may own a vacation house around the Lake, but I don't think he's ever actually been to it. He's got no ties that NH particularly cares about. Don't believe everything they say in the news.

Unfortunately, IMO, all the people running as republicans are a bunch of flaming loonies! no decent choice in there (and no, I"m not an Obama supporter, but... sheesh!)

NH has a lot of "independents".
Some do so just so that they can vote in any upcoming primary. As in Indepentdent one can declare one party over the other in a primary the day of voting.

Then there are other independents that vote for the person and not the party.

In more modern times it is the "Reagan Democrats/Rebubicans" of whom many were independents that just liked Ronald Reagan. They viewed him as a nice guy. For those folks who meets this criteria presently?

The swing voters and the independents will carry any upcoming election.

Once the fact that those who have no company paid health care sinks in and that those will be covered under The Affordable Care Act these folks will vote for President Obama. Health insurance or no health insurance - it's a no brainer.

actually, the five estates on Lake Winnipesaukee are in his wife's name. He's there a lot. He can be seen riding his bicycle to Bailey's ice cream bar on a hot evening. He tries to blend in with the general public...lol

Why wouldn't he? 90% of NH is ex-Mass. residents fleeing the results of their liberal policies.

None of the other GOP candidates do, but Romney certainly has a fighting chance. He was polling well in NH early in the campaign season, but the lengthy and ugly primary season has taken its toll. It's impossible to predict what will happen until the final weeks before the election. As usual, NH will be a swing state.

And we'll all turn off the television set at some point in frustration over the bombardment of political ads.

Agreed. Santorum or Gingrich would not have a prayer, and while Paul might make a go of it, I don't see him winning the nomination. NH has 4 electoral votes, so that could be huge in a tight race. If the GOP retains all the states they won in 08, wins VA, IN, and NC as they are expected to do this time, and picks off FL and OH, they need only to win one more small state to claim the Presidency. NH would bring them to 270.

thanks, Buck. I had heard from a number of people that he'd never actually been there. Which would certainly be a shame! Glad he's not entirely that stupid (even if he thinks it's fine to rive on long trips with his dog in a carrier on the roof)
