Libertarians and Anarchists are not one and the same. An Anarchist believes in no government. A libertarian believes in minimal government for the purpose of protecting individual freedoms. Libertarian beliefs in the US are most closely tied to a strict interpretation of the constitution...but they still vary tremendously.

So yes, you could very well be libertarian and work for the government.

(ahem) you'd be getting paid with your own taxes, too! Or do you think that a govt run institution like a prison or police should be run by volunteers? Money has to come from somewhere! ;-)

There seem to be a lot of people that confuse libertarians with anarchists lately. Maybe a side effect of anarchists latching on to the libertarian free stater movement?

Work for whoever will provide a paycheck for doing something not completely obnoxious. Money is green. Where it comes from is not your problem. Making certain you get some is your problem.

of course you could if you were really a libertarian. IMO, NOBODY should know your political views when you are a peon in the public system.
