Default How much did you pay to heat your home last year?

How much? What size house? Oil or fireplace/other? Thank you everybody.

Several past threads on this subject.

I own a modest size (1600 sq. feet) split level ranch built in 1972 . Original windows, insulation, etc.

We burn 5 cords of wood a year. We harvest our own so the cost is our time but you can buy green cordwood delivered for $150-$175 and seasoned for $250.

I also burn about 100 gallons of fuel oil for hot water (we have a seperate oil fired hot water heater that is not attached to the furnace) and rarely for the oil furnace if we are gone.

We have a 24X28 log home built in 1997. Last year we burnt 2 1/2 cords of wood and burned 2 tons of pellets. We paid $ 140 a cord for the wood and $ 200 a ton for the pellets. We have a oil furnace that only ran twice last winter just to make sure it was working properly.

2000 sq foot cape, built in 86, decent insulation, not so great windows, oil, forced hot water, somewhere between 500-600 gallons of oil for the heat and the hot water. This year we will be burning a wood stove 24/7 so i hope to reduce that amount DRASTICALLY.

We have natural gas for our little ranch of 1040 sq. ft. with no insulation. Natural gas is also for hot water, cooking. I think we spent $1500 maybe less on natural gas.

The house we rent is a two story, about 3500 square feet. Built in 2007. It has a fireplace at one end, and a radiant baseboards propane heat.

We ended up going through three cords of wood, and about 1800 gallons of propane between November, 2011 and March, 2012. Definitely a major shock to the system to us folks from Washington State, and something we were not even close to being prepared for. I trusted the rental agent when she told us it would be $400 or so a month for propane. Yeah, she got over on us big time.

This is the perfect example of why everyone hates on mcmansions in the general forum. I bet the house has 9-10 foot high ceilings too.

If you don't mind my asking, when was your house built?

If you want some relief e-mail Our Town Energy Alliance. Do it before end of July before priices go up again.
They buy in large blocks for members from the gas suppliers in the state. Average savings after I joined were $1 or more per gallon. Not bad for annual dues cost of $25.00.
