Extra weight over the rear axle of a RWD vehicle helps a lot. My '82 Corolla is a RWD car and without the 200 lbs of sand bags in the trunk is a real handfull on snow/ice even with snow tires. With the weight it only gets sideways when I expect it to not when it wants to. The weight also lets it go up hills a bit better and makes going down a bit more stable. In some situations it is actually quicker than my Subaru Outback wagon.

Thanks for all the responses. We solved the problem. We just got a Toyota 4 runner 4X4 over the weekend so i think we'll be fine with that. We do have a pick up 4X4 too and i'm familiar with weighing down the back end to keep from sliding too much.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in Germany and we will get our first big snow this weekend, most likely. Need to head off to the nearest German Hardware store/Home Depot equivalent to buy sand bags.
