Hmmm, interesting. We do plan on living wherever we settle for many years, so we do want to become a member of our community. We don't expect any place to be as diverse or tolerant as L.A. In fact on some level we are hoping it isn't quite that tolerant. But being a SAHM right now, I am really hoping to find friends to hang out with. The winters are long, and I don't want to turn into a mole. Neither Dh nor I are particularly outgoing, and sometimes we keep to ourselves. But since we will be far away from family, it will be important to find friends in our neighborhood and/or church.

I wouldn't take Hyun-Soo's warding-off as advice:
(a) According to his myspace page, he's 16. Which is odd, cos his profile says he's a computer engineer and he's lived in several locations around the world.
(b) He doesn't appear to have actually lived here in NH.
(c) He writes in ALL CAPS - which is, well, a bit anti-social internet wise isn't it?
I have not experienced negativity because I'm from somewhere else. Worst I've encountered is a general surprise that I'd move from Cali to NH.

Nashua is an all-around much better place to live than Manchester if you're talking about just the two cities. They both have really nice suburbs w/good school systems though. Check out Brookline (west of Nashua) or Bedford (south of Manchester) for some suburbs w/better school systems.

Native NH'ites may be discriminating but it's hidden and not spoken of, ever, EXCEPT, when some local yokel is on a drunken rampage yelling about the "dotheads" running the local Rite-AID stores.....

What's wrong w/"dotheads" running the local quik-e-marts and gas stations? They had $100k to buy one, so they bought it and they make good money doing it. It's not like natives can't do it if they wanted to -- it's just hard work!

You're absolutely right Parsec. It is hard work, and I never should have made a flippant post like that. When I logged on first thing this morning to delete it, I couldn't. I'm ashamed and embarrassed that I wrote that, and now have to live with it

my point was merely that people are very underhanded with discrimination in this state. it exists but is not acknowledged.
the pissant remark re: 'dotheads' was merely an example. I have nothing against anyone running their own business. More power to them.

I'm trying to convince myself not to post here & let this thread fade into the archives. Obviously, not working.
Thanks for your sincerity Val. I guess we all have our moments.
I appreciate the insights from all & I grew up surronded by diversity. I'm not a minority, but discrimination comes in all forms - even in reverse.

Would you say that is more true in the north than the south? If we moved to NH it would definitely be in the south, like in Nashua. Could you maybe give an example? would it be perhaps something I would encounter when my kids go to school? Or in a restaurant? Or just maybe chilly neighbors? Would I get the same treatment if I were not a minority, but not a born and bred in NH native either?
