Car window tinting law questions
So our car won't pass inspection because the driver side windows are tinted. We moved from Texas and you need that for heat relief. Now I know we don't need that as much here, but I still don't like the idea of taking the tint off the windows.
There is no grandfather clause in NH? This seems like a strange law for a state that has the creed "Live free or die"...Doesn't seem like you have to worry about gangsters and drive by shooting!
I'm tempted to leave the tinting on and just not get an inspection. So far have not had any issues...knock on wood.
Any thoughts? Anyone else face this? I can google the best way to remove it myself if I have to...
Thanks!

You will NOT be able to just leave the tinting on and hope for the best for long.. you will get stopped by the Police, and if you have registered your car and have NH plates now, and you do not have the proper inspection sticker on your windshield, the cops WILL stop you and you WILL get fined. New Hampshire has the sticker in the window and it is a different color for each year, just like the stickers for your Licence Plate are, they match in color.. so they can see you have the correct color on your plates but not in the window, and also it has the month on that inspection sticker and licence plate stickers in bold black, so they can see it when driving by, and especially with all of the construction that goes on in this state you are bound to run into a policeman at some time.
I believe the tinting cannot be more than 20%, and there is some law that has to do with only the rear windows being tinted. Perhaps just take the front tinting off and maybe you can pass. What did the inspection station tell you?
Good Luck.. but get it taken care of ASAP is my recommendation!

I didn't even think of that. Planning to move next summer back to NH. Living in FL, all our cars have tint on them and just bought a 4x4 for NH and we just got our 2 front windows tinted this week!!! I looked it up online DMV of NH and driver or passenger side cannot have tint and anything else legally tinted cannot be less than 35%.

There is clear tint available that screens out most UV but stays clear (no pun intended) of the tint laws, if that's a concern.
Otherwise, no gangsta front glass.

I wouldn't go without getting inspected, my husband is a police officer and I'll tell you thats one of the major things he looks for. Even when he's not on duty and we're jus driving around he comments on the cars not being inspected. I roll my eyes but its a big deal to the PD. I'd recommend just taking it off or getting the clear UV ones recommended above, don't make it hard on yourself

try finding another inspection garage - ask around at work/coffee shop who is a little more lenient. I did have to take the tint off the Drivers/Passenger windows, but I was able to leave the rear windows alone. I got stopped by the police twice since then - darned lead foot - but neither one said one word.

I was brought up in NH. Just as said earlier in the thread, You will not be able to have the tint on and not have an inspection for long..... they WILL ticket you for non inspection and the windows. Depending on the town you live in will depend on how long it'll take them to catch on.

Yep, I know people who have tried this. NH police will ticket you every day they see you. Just remove the tint from the front window, driver and passenger seat and you will be good.

What if your car is registered in another state but you live in NH part time? They can't ticket out of state "visitors" can they?

When I visit from NC and I have 15% on my windows here, I have never had a problam, but I DO have to mind my driving habits...Because of the windows, I stick out like a sore thumb!
