Thinking NH
I'm US Military and have lived all over; MA, FL, CO, NH, TX, LA, VA, NC and overseas just to name a few. We're heading to HI for a 3 year tour in the spring. We cannot wait to get back to NH. I have 5 yrs until military retirement and it cannot come quick enough. I've experienced this behavior at almost every location and it is only getting worse. FL and TX were the worst (my opinion). NH was a great experience; vacationing while I was growing up and living there 97-00 Sea Coast, Somersworth, Dover and Portsmouth area. There is nothing else like NH except maybe VT. We'll be relocating after the service and plan to move near Durham/UNH or the like. Anyone out there with specifics please reply.

OK, going to try to muster up some sympathy for your upcoming 3-year stay in HI, really I am Ok, I failed...
No seriously, try to enjoy it while you're there. We visited a family member stationed in HI (Oahu) several years ago. He was a Marine, and figured there was worse places to be stationed... She was the traveling along wife and HATED every minute in "paradise", so we never made it to touristy things like the Polynesian Culture Center, a luau, things like that, but did make it to a great flea market LOL and a junkyard piled high with cars on each side of you (definitely not a tourist attraction!)
Overall, I thought it was a great place to visit, enjoyed the warm blue water very much, yes it was hot and humid, but I loved it anyway... You're absolutely right, there IS nothing like NH and people don't realize that until they've been forced to live elsewhere... and when you're ready to come back to New Hampshire we'll still be here enjoying the snow and foliage and cooooold Atlantic Ocean

Thinking NH
I'm a native New Englander; born and raised in Lynn, MA; family vacations all over NE. From 97-2000 My wife and I lived in Wolfeboro Falls then Dover before I decided to rejoin the US Military in 2000. We're nearing <5 years left before military retirement . We've lived all over; if I had to rate; MA , FL , CO , NH , TX , LA , VA , NC and overseas Qatar and Saudi, to name a few. We're heading to HI for a 3 year tour in the spring. We've seen disturbing cities and nice places at almost every location. Another thread mentioned rude and unsettling behavior in CA. We've seen it in several locations and it is only getting worse. FL and TX were the worst (my opinion ). We cannot wait to get back to NH. NH was a great experience . There is nothing else like NH except maybe VT. We're looking to relocate after the service and plan to move near Durham/UNH or the like. The property taxes in the Durham area are maikng us nervous. I'm in Healthcare, FEMA/NDMS/DoD disaster rsponse, my wife is Human Resources and we have a 3 year old. We're looking for; 1. a vacation plot of land in northern NH and 2. a place to set up home near Portsmouth. We're interested in the plot for purchase in <12 mnths. Anyone out there with specifics please reply.

Thanks, I couldn't get out of Lynn fast enough. I've been back to the area a few times and it just seems to be getting worse everytime. I hate to be thought of by NH people as a MA transplant. I think my years away from either makes me just a newcomer. We're hoping to purchase a small vacation cabin/cottage in N. NH (maybe near Bethlehem) but settle in and around Portsmouth. The property taxes seem outrageous, but I guess one has to weigh thegood with the bad. Thanks again.

Sorry about the reply, new to the City-Data Forum. I meant to respond to the thread. Like I said, I've been to Oahu on TDY but it was only two weeks. It seemed like when I was in Korea for a year only it had a beach. If you have any thoughts regarding to areas to stay away from, either a bad area or one that is outrageously taxed, we'd appreciate it.
