Why not? You feel safe where you are now, right? The only difference is that it snows a lot up here and if you are unsure of driving in it, then you'll feel unsafe. There is nothing to indicate where you are from, so depending on your experience driving in snow, you shouldn't feel any safer or vulnerable than where you are now. With that being said, the Accent is a decent little car, and it will handle anything that NH can throw at it, short of a raging 2 foot blizzard. Then you should just stay home and have some hot chocolate!

Hi Tlynn,
congrats! May in NH is lovely (particularly before the black flies come out). What part of NH are you moving to?
ok... why wouldn't you be safe in a Hyndai Accent? In winter, drive slowly and carefully on the back streets until you feel more secure about the snow - and most streets are well plowed anyway. As long as you have good tires (and you can get snow tires if you want) you'll be fine. Heck, we've rented all sorts of cars when we've been up last year.
Unless there's some other reason you think an Accent could be a problem?

As long as you have front wheel drive, whatever kind of vehicle you have. you will be fine. Rear wheel drive will have you all over the roads.

Sorry to jump in here but...black flies?? Are they different from regular flies? We are considering NH too but have some concerns about some things. Just wondering if black flies are something I need to add to my list. LOL

oo, yep, they're different. Black flies bite! but they are seasonal, and they don't come indoors (unlike mosquitoes). UNH has a fact sheet about them <http://www.ultimate.com/washington/wla/blackfly/>
they're just part of the wonderful fauna we have

A common misconception is that the roads are snow covered all winter. Not true. It snows and gets cleared, and the next day, the roads are normal again. It's only during the snow fall that you have to be concerned. It really depends on where you will live, and how far you will commute whether you'll have any trouble with your car. What I mean is, your car will do fine no matter where you live, but how it does in the snow depends on where you'll be driving. Up in the mountains will be different than the coast.

I have to agree with this as a newbie up here since September.
We've had one heck of a bad winter. Fortunately we live on 'main street' in our village and they plow us out very well. The plow man is up and down the road a dozen times during the snowstorms.
The next day it is cleared.
One thing I noticed--in most of the storms--the next day is usually a bright and sunny one! So you have this miserable day then the next it's sunny and welcoming.
Get good snowtires.
I see all sorts of cars here from beat up station wagons that look 30 years old to brand new 4 by 4s.
By the way, the snow if FINALLY melting..hip hip hooray!

Responses Thanks!
Suzette thank you for moving my thread, I had no idea where to start
This all has been very helpful. I am planning a move from Orlando. I want to settle down and perhaps buy a small cottage one day. It seemed the job market was so much better in that area for what my current work as an Administrative Assistant. Also, I like the conservative side of things so I am hoping to find a good church and job. My plan was to move up in May and then I will have about 3 weeks to get working and bringing in income. I would like to rent a room in a house until I am on my feet financially.
Does anyone have advice on the best cities to commute to with decent salaries. Or has anyone actually moved up without a job? I will have only 1 month finances to hold me.
thanks again - I'm glad for this forum

If you are up on your skills, like Excel and Microsoft Office, you should be able to get an Administrative Job.
You should really have more than one month's money to tide you by. I've been here since September and only have been offered *crappy* jobs. If you wanted to, you could do something else if you HAD do like retail but you can't really bank on that because up here those jobs even seem 'in demand.'

This is true for the average motorist on the road that has very poor driving skills, in the hands of someone that actually knows how to drive, a rwd vehicle is no problem.
